Hi There I was looking at a pic of a GT3 rep last night (as in the Body kit on a Carrera 996) and noticed that the engine bay pic was slightly different to mine!! This got me thinking, am I missing something, or is this an "Optional Part"? Does it increase performance? Should I look at getting one, my car is a 1998? Its a sort of tube that goes up to the Engine Lid when the lid is shut, and joins the airvent in the lid with the Air Intake in the engine bay? Thanks Edward

I'd get that fixed/ replaced...

Yup, you're missing a pretty important part. Right now your engine is taking in warm air from around the engine. That tube takes the cold air from outside the engine bay and directs it through the air filter past the MAF and into the engine. No doubt it's affecting your cars performance... I'd get that fixed/ replaced...
+1 or get a performance air filter (Evoms or K&N) - Simon
Totally agree with above but there is some good news, if you are happy with the current performance then you will be chuffed when you get some cold air feed
Having changed to full k+n system, i'm sure i've got one of these kicking about that i doubt i'll re-use, so pm me your details and i'll send you it down if you want Andy
scrub the above, thinking back i'm sure you reuse that part with the k+n, sorry
That's probably what happened before, previous owner left it on a K&N and sold it on, woops. It can't be an expensive part, it's only a plastic down tube...
Cheers Andy, and I note your later post re: the part not being available as still on the K&N, which is no problem Its posts like the above which really show what a decent bunch of people 911uk forum users are, always willing to help, and even offer parts! Amazing, its very rare in todays world! Porsche drivers are often seen by other motorists as a bit like flashier BMW drivers, and often refered to as Tos*ers etc, and indeed a lot of the City Boys are, but the genuine enthusisasts, such as you guys are some of the nicest people one could meet! I shall order the part, as said it cant be too expensive, and if it is i have a bit of washing machine tubing which would do just the job  I love the performance of my car as it is, so if its better then super!!! It may also explain why the car was loosing coolant sometimes around town, as bubbling over, when there was no crack in the radiators, and no crack in the filler bowl, I am surprised my trusteed mechanics at Chelsea Carrera didnt spot this, but not to worry! Keep up the good work guys! Anyone have the part number? Kind Regards Edward
Oops, I must be in the wrong forum, I thought we were talking about Porsche.
Good point John One only has to look at the Plastic interior trim for 996's to see how a cheap bit of plastic can suddenly cost £400 etc!! unreal!! :frustrated:
I think this part is called a snorkel. As mentioned, it allows airbox to draw in cold air from outside the car (some vehices have a scoop type design to the engine lid which will actually push outside air into the snorkel/airbox for a weak air ram effect) Warm air is much less dense than cold air so you maybe losing a few BHP by having warm air only. As for "cheap" parts, if it is like a lot of Porsche replacement parts, you will need to buy a whole new engine to get a complete airbox! (that's a joke, I think) You could try a breakers (like PorschApart or similar), or appeal to someone who has done an induction kit install.
again the breakers are your best bet for this.. http://www.douglasvalley.co.uk/ Or if you have kids just nik there snorkle and gafa tape it to you car... Or even if you have kid's make sure they have not removed it made it into a snorkle... :floor:
have you read my post about my 996 sidelight not working? http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=41320&highlight=
meant to say, wouldnt a bit of suerglue work!>
Guys Just been very pleasantly surprised by Porsche West London, I phoned up, you cannot buy the snorkel seperately, but the whole Airbox is what seems to me to be a very reasonable In fact, whilst we are on this topic, I bought a whole new rear engine lid Fan about 2 months ago, and the whole thing was only £83, which seemed v reasonable too! Some parts are illogically cheap, some illogically expensive! Edward
