Suggestion
You could argue all day which is the best - the most important question is what do you intend to use the car for and how many people you intend to take with you?

The Porsche will use less fuel, and gut feel, will be cheaper to run.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, after considering an S4 V8 (not enough performance for a V8 and the Mercedes C23 AMG, lots of little problems) I have narrowed my car down (and upped my budget!) to either an RS6 or a Porsche 996 Carrera 2 or 4, anyone had any advice which is best? I understand these cars are very different but do fall into similar prices brackets.
I am aware that both cars have some fundamental issues Porsche's Intermediate shaft Bearing and Rear Main Seal and the RS6's suspension and gearbox problems!
Thanks Stu
I am currently lucky enough to have an RS6 and a 996 turbo. As you say they are very different cars fulfilling different briefs. Both have their good and bad points ... both very desireable in their own right.

Rich.
I test drove a £33000 RS6 at an Audi dealer.
The DRC had failed and the SM said it was a bent alloy.
I bought a Subaru.
IMHO, RMS oil leak less stressful than no suspension.
Have you typed DRC on the rs246 forum?
The RS6 has great performance and a thundersome engine. It is very practical too, in Avant form which would be good. But it still has the feel inside and out of a "normal" estate. It is only available as an auto too if that matters, albeit a 6 speed to the 911's 5 speed tiptronic.
A Carrera will feel more interesting inside and looks great outside, but I like the q-car appeal of the RS6 and the build quality is great aside from the well-known gearbox probs etc.
The Porsche will use less fuel, and gut feel, will be cheaper to run. You do read about the odd engine totally letting go, but its very, very rare, and for the most part the other little problems are nothing serious. I suspect that the Carrera will be more satisfying to drive, if nothing else because until the RS4/R8, Audis and steering feel were mutually exclusive...
The main benefit of a Porsche is the cottage industry of great specialists across the country. We have a new-shape 2003 Audi A8, and it frustrates me to always have to go to inept and expensive main dealers but no-one else has the full diagnostic kit.
My budget is around 15k which I know is low, but there are a few available, I am going to speak to Hartech in Bolton which is near me in Warrington before I even think about going to see one and gather some good advice.
I am currently selling my Audi A3 3.2 with DSG 250bhp, I understand the Porsche is much more of a drivers car but how difference would there be in a straight line?
Thanks
As Taran says - loads of difference!
The A3 is a heavy car and the 3.2 is a heavy engine hanging out over the axle at the wrong end! OK, so 0-60 on dry tarmac might not be much different, but in less than perfect conditions you'll have loads more traction with the 911, no torque steer, much less understeer, and a top speed much higher than the A3 (with in-gear acceleration to match). But the main difference you will notice every time you drive it is steering feel: There is nothing quite like a 911 for that, whichever one you end up with - even the C4 versions feel like you are a part of the chassis...
I've been lucky in my job in that I get to drive loads of very fast and expensive new cars - sometimes on race tracks - and nothing else drives quite like a 911
A final point, until I had my 993 I had never had the same car for more than 18 months in my life, as I get bored with most things very quickly... However, I kept the 993 for 4 years and only sold it then as the finance agreement had ended and I had to pay off the balloon!
Go for it - you'll never go back! :thumb:
ETA: I had 3 Audis in the 3 years prior to getting the 993 - An A6, a 20V quattro coupe, then a TT...
Hello Guys
Im new here but for once a subject i can get involved in!! 8)
I Had an 03 RS6 which was a stunning car but i have changed to a 996TT (manual). Obviously the 996 C2 / 4 will be somewhat different in performance but i have to agree with the guys giving you advice above. The 911 feels like it was built to enjoy, the RS6 was a stunning accomplishment considering its size and weight.
If you dont need the space go for the C2/4 you'll not regret it :thumb:
Enjoy
Ian
Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I will go for Porsche, so I am going to shamelessly add my Pistonheads advert for my current Audi A3 3.2 DSG!
