The Chinese are bad about making plastic parts that melt under high heat situations versus the heat tested OEM parts that can handle higher temps without breakdown.
Leading evidence: 'Test oem parts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Set monochrome oem versions' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I also have a set monochrome OEM versions that are made totally different from the color versions.

And considering you can get a set for under $20, not much to lose since it's just a cosmetic part.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum, and a new owner of a 2001 model 996 C4.
The car came with the gold crest center caps, however I'd like to change them to Carrera 4.
There seems to be different serial numbers for identical looking caps such as:
996.361.303.10
996.361.303.05
Any help explaining the difference between 996....10 and 05 would be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore, were the gold crest caps an option when new or are they incorrect for this model?
Many thanks in advance.
Note: both caps look the same as the bottom Carrera 4 pic.
Thanks gnat. In that case I may just leave them, although I do quite like the Carrera 4 caps.
Also, it the caps are plastic should I assume they're non genuine?
Normally, I would tell people to definitely go OEM, but in the case of the Porsche center caps, it doesn't really matter because the aftermarket non-OEM are very nice. In fact, I'd say the Chinese versions actually hold up better. Ask me how I know. (I own two sets of OEM center caps) But if you have to have the OEM, many people post complete sets on eBay all the time...

Thanks for all the feedback. Incidentally those were the exact Carrera 4 caps I was looking at.
I suppose if the serial number begins with 996 they should fit..
Hmmm.... that wasn't my experience with the Chinese ones. The Chinese ones are made out of a brittle plastic... polycarbonate or something. The real OEM ones are made of a softer plastic, maybe polypropylene. I bought a set of Chinese ones because I wanted colored caps. First time I raced the car, the tabs on the caps broke from heat transfer from the brakes, and the caps fell out. I finally popped for a set of OEM ones. Found a new-in-the-box set on Ebay for $100.
Yea, I can see that happening. The Chinese are bad about making plastic parts that melt under high heat situations versus the heat tested OEM parts that can handle higher temps without breakdown.
But in my case, I don't track the car and so I guess it's fine for normal use. And considering you can get a set for under $20, not much to lose since it's just a cosmetic part. My original OEM center caps have not held up. Porsche uses a glue that doesn't hold their colored crests on long term. I noticed the OEM crest is made of thicker (maybe slightly heavier?) die cast metal versus the super thin Chinese foil, and maybe that is part of the problem. And the clear coat on the colored crests has turned cloudy from oxidation. I also have a set monochrome OEM versions that are made totally different from the color versions. But again, the clear coat has started to peal off. Uggh!
Regarding the different part numbers for the caps I found this post on another site. Hopefully it's accurate, and may be useful for others who read this thread.
