Peter! After 5 days the alarm system goes into sleep mode and disables the remote, which it was why it didn't work on the button. Disconnecting and re-connecting the battery will have woken it up. Has the driver's door lock been changed at some point? There is a blade on the end of the key tumber which engages in the door lock mechanism. It can be a bit fiddly to get it lined up in the slot, and I suspect that it isn't engaged.
