Suggestion

Simply sit there with the catch tray (this can be made from an old 5 ltr can and cut a 5x5" hole in the side, keep cap on until ready to empty), remove sump plug (where oil-proof gloves as old engine oil is carsonagenic (SP?) cancerous horrid stuff) let it fill 3/4's, empty somewhere safe (best thing is to have two gallon containers at the ready, old engine oil can have uses or just take to nearest indy, most burnt it in their garage heaters and are glad of it) do another 3/4s then do the rest.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now that I'm keeping the car for awhile longer and once she's back from her annual service I'm going to change the oil. I have a few questions though: 1) I've read it takes 9 litres to do the change, correct? 2) How have people jacked the car up to do this? I've read some just jack the back up, open the drain, release the jack and let it flow out. Others have fully jacked up onto axle stands? 3) I'm obviously replacing the oil filter but what about the drain plug and washer, replace this too? 4) How have you disposed of the old oil? I've researched this quite alot and apparantly it's a very easy job so no problem actually doing it myself but any hints, helps or tips you may have would be great. Thanks :thumb:

POST 2Original post

Stupid Question but if you've just had a service do they not change the oil? 1) not sure 2) not sure but you want the car sat either flat or a slight angle that will be favourable to getting the maximum amount of oil out 3) get a can from halfords that catches the oil that comes out, specially made for this job, has a tray built into it so catches all the oil. These do work but sometimes the flow of oil from the sump is too quick for the tray/can to handle so it pays to have the can sat in a larger tray to avoid getting oil on your drive/garage floor. 4) You should be able to use the plug and washer again, check the condition of the washer, if it looks to flattened then replace just the washer. Don't forget to change the oil filter between taking the old oil out and putting the new oil in, and put the plug back in too!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't think they did it on an annual, it's not actually due a minor for another 3k, actually not due a annual either for another few months but car was going in anyway for alarm and aircon warranty fix. Just trying to think ahead so everything is new and/or fresh for May...

POST 4Original post

Dig a hole and burry it,,,, after all thats were it came from... uh: i'm joking of coarse..

POST 5Original post

1) Yes, you will need 9 litres if you are changing the filter as well. 2) It needs to be reasonably level when draining, and it's best to get the oil hot first, and leave it draining for at least 20 minutes to fully drain. I can't comment about using jacks, because I always put it on a friend's 2-post lift. 3) A sump plug is £2.38 and washer is £0.22. I would change them both first time, and just the washer after that. 4) Put the oil in the empty containers, and take it down the local council tip. They have the facilities to dispose of it properly/recycle it. Here's the best way to get it in the air:

POST 6Original post

I have personally serviced a few Boxsters & 911's, as said it takes a whopping 9 litres, that is the tricky bit. The filter casing can be a biatch to get off, it should only be 25nm tight but that can sometimes take some breaking the seal. I use a strap wrench... got one? If not get one, a must on this job.
