Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

In these times of financial uncertainties and go-green pressure, every single manufacturer is trying to lower their engines consumption and carbon emissions. Most have chosen the route of downsizing the engines and/or adding a supercharger/turbo charger and/or going hybrid and/or diesel. So far, Porsche has gone the hybrid way and the diesel way and we keep hearing rumours about the new generation Boxster/Cayman getting a 4 cylinder engine and then out of the blue, Porsche comes up with a 4.0 NA engine for the GT3 RS. Based on what I was able to read, it's just an increase in displacement of the 3.8 currently available in the 911 range. In addition, the 0.2 displacement increase is standard procedure at Porsche to increase power from time to time. Do you think that the 4.0 is just a "perk" to boost sales of a soon to be retired GT3 RS 997 or do you think we will see it again in the 991 line up as a "standard" engine? Saad

POST 2Original post

The 991 uses the DFI block which for the new Carrera S will be a 4.0L putting out over 400HP. The Carrera will have either a 3.6 or 3.8 w/ reportedly 360-370HP. However, the 4.0L in the GT3RS will not see further production as it is based on the Metzger block dating to the air cooled 911 era. Presumably, based on information "leaked", all 991 911 variants will use the new 9A1 DFI engine including the GT3 variants. The Turbos already have the new block, although the GT2RS still uses the Metzger block.

POST 3Original post

From what i understand they are homologating that engine for next years cup cars... Basically it is the same bore as the current GT3RS 3.8L w/the stroker crank from the R/RSR... The Metzger Split Case 4.0(the one you are referencing) will likely only make an appearance in this car. Porsche is moving to the new corporate motor for these cars in the future(DFI w/other improvements).
