I posted this in the driving routes section yesterday but need to share this with my fellow 987ers.
I stumbled across this brilliantly coded website yesterday that mathematically highlights all the mapped roads in the world based on the radius of the curves and frequency of those curves. It uses OpenStreetmaps data so you can add notes to the road and see speedlimits etc.
It looks like its been up in this format since 2020 and I can't believe I haven't come across it before!
Road Curvature
If you want to feel sad about the roads around where you live (I'm in Kansas City so some sadness here...), check out Japan!
Have fun planning this weekends drive routes
Cheers,
Julian
This is awesome! Luckily I'm in Japan right now so I'll have to rent a Cayman lol
Thanks for that awesome website. I looked up some of my favorite roads and they are indeed highlighted in red indicating a lot of curves. Fantastic.
Pretty impressive coding but I am not sure how well this works in practice. Unsurprisingly, I am not in an area that has been comprehensively scanned and that isn't my issue. The roads that it has highlighted are all pretty much unacceptable for any kind of sporty driving. Several are residential streets within municipal subdivisions and others aren't roads at all, but private lanes. It's probably easier to use Google Earth to figure out where to drive, at least around here. I would be interested in comments from people in the more densely mapped areas.
What I’m finding is a sort of “false positives” situation in some cases. Roads which the mapping rates highly which I know are not because of various factors like traffic, dense housing, traffic lights, etc.
But it also correctly identifies some of my favorite back roads.
One insight I have is that perhaps one should use both the color coding (red being more curvy than yellow) in conjunction with the thickness of the lines. I think the thicker lines indicate more “substantial” roads like on a regular map. In my quick gander at the map, the thinner ones are much better generally for backroads driving.
After reading through the "How it Works" section (highly recommended) I discovered that zooming in on the lines allows you to open a info box with available information, including surface, speed limit, etc. It's actually pretty cool.
Thanks. Posted this to our local PCA region Facebook page.
whoa!! thank you for the site I've been looking for a few around Colorado
There is also the "Roads by Porsche" app. It's free on the App Store and can be localized to your area.

Here's
my reference on similar, with a focus on actual touge, not just curves... but as you've assumed, if the regular roads are that nice (and they are), there really are some seriously good roads among them.
I am slowly working through as many as possible, and details including photographs and some detailed maps
here
.
Enjoy!

What sort of borked URL referrals is going on here? First, I am told to not post 'foreign stuff', then not allowed to post my Japan photographs?
Have I offended someone?
I have used both - very neat - I have a road or 2 in the Roads app as well. For our fun runs we use Ride with GPS - it is the best I have seen for that kind of thing used for 1 event etc.
Very cool site, shows me what I already know. I live in the deserted wasteland of curvy roads.
