Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hey P-9,
I just bought my first
Porsche
a
987.2
Boxster base
6 speed. I'm quite stoked.
I'm driving it up from the former owners home in Sacramento to Seattle in one shot (I love doing this kinda stuff) What would you want to see in a roadside kit. Mind you it has to be very small, as I'm only bringing a carry-on or easily sourced at Autozone or the like.
Thanks for the help. I'm so excited to have a
Porsche
to call my own.
A credit card.
Probably nothing else, unless the PO has given you any warnings.
There is little to worry about, and little you can really be ready for.
Enjoy your drive.
I did mine from Atlanta to Charlotte. And twice to FL since.
The only thing I would bring is a AAA card for towing, (not for mechanical concerns) but mainly a flat tire, as you would need to be towed to a nearby tire shop. Congratulations on your new ride and enjoy the trip!
OBDII reader
, check the toolkit in the frunk to make sure it has the multi spline security lug bolt fitting and 19mm wheel bolt tool or bring your own. Can of fix a flat. 1L container of oil. I always take a set of Torx keys on my long road trips. Cable ties,
duct tape
, disposable gloves, couple of micro fiber towels/rags. Sunscreen/hat.
Having said all of that, I've done plenty of long road trips in both my
987.1
cars between KC and Atlanta, never had an issue and they are awesome road trip cars.
Have fun!
Cheers,
Julian
wishing you a safe and smooth trip.
Just in case - an emergency kit should contain:
1. tyre plugs/repair kit
2. air pump (there should be one in the car near toolkit- if not get another one)
3. top up coolant/washer fluid/oil level and tyre pressures before your trip. if anything requires a lot of top up - bring some along in case....
4. fire extinguisher
Hopefully you got a PPI done ahead of purchase so you know it is in decent mechanical shape. I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just get in and drive it.
Unless you are talking about snacks. I'm a big Chex Mix guy. Water is always a balance, too much and you have to stop but don't want to get dehydrated.
Thanks for all the replies. No PPI as PO had one done 5ish months ago and I won it at auction and didn't have the time. It drives great for 113k, some minor squeaks/rattles and the shifter needs a refresh. Other than that it handled the 12ish hour drive yesterday great. This is my first
Porsche
and I am smitten with it. I'm taking it into a local
Porsche
specialist (Bristows in Tacoma) for a Post Pursche inspection. We will see what they find.
Overall I'm elated and I keep telling myself this is not a dream.
PS 3rd gear pulls in the tunnels around here are utter ecstasy.
Don't mind the insect genocide on the front thats coming off tonight or tomorrow.
I did a similar but longer(3 days + overnight ferry) journey less than a year ago. Here is a list of stuff I brought.\
Credit card(s)
Cell phone(s) with charger
Clip on cell phone holder
Cash
Empty water bottle that so I could fill it and keep hydrated
Bug spray wipes in case I had to pull over somewhere at night.
hand cleaning wipes (not the disinfectant kind but the grease cleaning kind)
Band aids/FA kit
Sweater
Rain jacket
Sun glasses
Over night bag with a few days of clothes
Zip ties
Blue shop towels
Optional: Fire extinguisher but you'd have to buy it once you land and the chances of you putting out an engine fire and pretty slim to none.I skipped this one.
Windshield cleaner. I've never bought a car that had a clean inside windshield. It only becomes evident driving a night. Maybe do the Rain-x thing if you will be driving through a lot of rain.
Realistically it's a modern car. If it breaks on the side of the road you most likely won't be able to fix it on the side of the road.
first and foremost, a case of bottled water. it is as you probably know it will be 100+ degrees plus this weekend in the Sacto Valley (and about 65 degrees in Seattle). I-5 is the fastest route, but also the hottest. oh and check the firemaps, there may be some issues along the way.
Credit card, cash and cell phone. Snacks and water for the driver. I also like to have a tire
plug
kit in my car at all times.
I picked up my
Cayman
in Dallas, drove it to Denver, Yellowstone and then Spokane for the
Porsche
Parade. Bought a quart of oil at Wal-Mart along the way because the oil was in the middle when I picked it up. After Parade I drove it to Seattle to be shipped to HIlo.
Don't forget to take a towel. And maybe a pack of wet wipes.
Unless the PO has proof of recent oil change, do it before you hit the road, plus an extra quart for top-up. And check coolant level and tire pressures, of course.
