2006 Cayman S
987c, stock, 72k miles. Thanks to a previous thread here on the cupholder assembly, I knew that when the "cupholder panel" fails to fold back up and click into place that the entire assembly needs to be replaced. I called my local
Porsche
dealer parts dept. to get a price ($482) and I do want to sell the car someday and it looks unseemly with the panel down ALL the time, so I bit the bullet. Made an appointment and said I'd need a loaner car. I showed up early at 8:20am and I'm the only one in the place. The Service Manager asked for my license and proof of insurance. He told me they have to check them closely now because of the "incident" (customer totaled a loaner, came to find out his insurance had lapsed; how do you total a nearly new
Porsche
in town????). He asked me if this was all we were doing today and I said yessir. I had spoken to him last week about an oil and filter change ($305) and I declined. Had it done yesterday at my trusted Jag/Rover/
Acura
/Mercedes mechanic for $112 (genuine
Porsche
filter, 5w30
Castrol
synthetic). He then asked me if I had time to wait, the customer turned in the
Macan
after hours last night and it needed a wash and fuel. I said sure. Checked out the merch on display (genuine
Porsche
tire valve stem caps, set of 4, $64) and then wandered out on the lot to review the inventory (
Panamera
Turbo S sedan: how can it be a turbo if it's all electric???). No prices on any of these vehicles, new or preowned. 20 minutes later I'm on my way in a
Macan
with 785 miles on it. Turbo 4 cylinder I believe. Not too bad but the A/C is weak, really weak. To me it's more of a hatchback than a compact SUV but I guess they're pretty popular. Service Manager calls me at 3pm, it's ready. I show up after work and pay the tab, $637.85 with labor, tax and "shop fees $15.18". He tells me it passed the "multi-point inspection" except the front
tires
are wearing, would I like a quote on replacements? Sure, I say. He asks me my preferred brand, I say Sumitomo. Three times. And then again later. I don't track, I just need decent
tires
for the daily drive. He says he can only quote
Porsche
approved
tires
and then... he's really phoning it in here, prints me out
Michelin Pilot Sport
PS2 (max performance summer) $215 each and
Pirelli
WInter Sottozero Serie II (performance winter/snow) $230.16. I'm in Kansas. We get some snow but this ain't Minnesota. Mount/balance, 4 wheel alignment, disposal, wheel weights, road hazard = $465 plus the cost of the pair of
tires
. I've had enough and get up to leave. He thanks me, I thank him. He tells me he had it washed and vacuumed so I thank him again and get out of there. My conclusion here is that rich people don't pay enough income tax.
You should’ve bought a used part from a wrecked car and replaced it yourself. Bet it would cost you $50
You brought a
Porsche
to a
Porsche
dealership. Not sure what you were expecting. Their cars are expensive. Parts and service is expensive.
The guy asked if you wanted a quote on new
tires
, you said yes, and then were mad that they didn’t have Sumitomos?
just curious how much would this cost at a indie/diy?
"wrecked car" I thought of that. But you know how many salvaged
Cayman
/Boxters there are in Kansas? After I finally find one, probably in Missouri: "Hey man I just need the cupholder assembly!" They're not exactly as plentiful as Camaro Z-28's you know.
Oh I knew it was expensive when the audio head unit crapped out and this same Service Manager quoted me $4,643.12 plus $172 in labor to replace it, with a 6 month lead time. I just thought some of you might like to know just how ridiculously expensive it really is. $305 for an oil change and filter? I thought maybe double another shop's rate but it actually is triple. Incredible. Or, as somebody else wrote on here recently, "Congratulations! You own a
Porsche
!"
Nah not mad about the Sumitomo's. I don't know if he had not heard of them because he's so Team
Porsche
and they are not authorized or if it was because we were both wearing masks and he couldn't get what I was saying. Also, I don't think I've every seen the word "
Michelin
" on Planet 9 but maybe I just haven't read far enough. Not the first name I think of for sports car
tires
. Oh, obviously it's me. Look whats on their web page:
Performance Sport Tires | Michelin
The cupholder assembly? I guess I could have had the Jag/Rover/
Acura
/Mercedes/etc mechanic price it for me but I don't know that they do that sort of thing regularly. I didn't want to hear "We're not a body shop" or something. They are old guys who quit the local dealers years ago due to, you guessed it, price gouging the customers. They told me they often have to order parts from Kansas City or Oklahoma City because the local dealers' parts depts refuse to sell to them.
My
986
had Sumitomo
tires
until I replaced them with
Michelin
. They were brand new, my experience was they flat spotted and felt like Conestoga wagon wheels for the first two miles.
Agree with Kiznarsh, additionally it's not merely savings. I'm confident nobody is as meticulous and careful as I am with my vehicle.
Some
Porsche
dealers do charge a lot; some less but all are expensive.
I read somewhere that
Porsche
makes more on the sale of every car than any manufacturer like $9000 per car
The top Chevrolet dealers each sell more Corvettes in a year than
Porsche
sells in all their dealers for all their models nationwide so they need to cleanup on every sale and service.
Surprised they didn't just do it while you waited! Changing out the cup holder is a very easy job!
I love my dealerships here in San Diego, but I don't go to them when I'm looking for a deal, that's for sure. For instance, when I had to replace my steering rack, I got quoted around $3000 for the new rack (part only, not labor!). A remanufactured one through an independent was $700 (again, part only, not labor). Yeah, guess which way I went! Car's got 160,000 miles on it now, I'm fine with things not being brand new anymore.
Its a popular issue unfortunately with the cup holder, however only 2 small bolts hold it in....less then a 10min repair
I just had this problem with my cupholder and was able to fix it with
this video
, the difference is that I packed the spring full of grease and that fixed the issue.
I bought one for $199 on eBay and it took maybe 5 minutes to install it. It’s two easy bolts in the glovebox.
Did you go to troll them or something?
