Honestly, if you saw the part I am talking about you could not possibly conceive that it's repair would cost more than a tenner!

At least the plus side is its shared with the Boxster isn't it...so there should be a plentiful supply of used/breakers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

MoT centre kindly supplied a new bulb to get it through, but that didn't work either (they are 'special' halogen bulbs with asymmetrical lugs): So, off to Silverstone OPC for a new bulb...
My 107,000 mile 9 1/2 year-old C4 would have sailed through its MoT today - had the offside sidelight been working!

Fitted new bulb in OPC car-park and it still didn't work. Technicians very kindly had a quick look for me and managed to bodge it just for the MoT retest, but said it needs to be properly fixed at some stage.
This is where the disbelief comes in... Anyone who has changed a sidelight bulb (on a car with litronics) will know it fits into a tiny black plastic housing which just rests inside a tube in the headlight surround. This bit of plastic has apparently 'failed' on my car and the only Porsche approved solution is...
wait for it...
a complete new headlight unit at just £900 + VAT!!!
Honestly, you have to see it to believe it... It looks like about 50 pence worth of bulb holder, but apparently it cannot be ordered on its own as "Porsche didn't expect it to ever fail!"
Big thumbs up to Silverstone OPC though - wouldn't even let me buy a drink for the Techs... and the lovely receptionist (Stephanie?) made me a nice cup of coffee and generally looked after me while I waited...
£900+VAT (mind you it's not so bad now as it's only 15%
) CAn the rubber be removed! If it can then you should be able to track one down somewhere...
I feel a quick search on Ebay coming..
Hope you get it sorted.
Replacement from somewhere like Design 911 is £350.00 -£400.00
Not good, but a lot better than £900.00!
Porsch - Apart or Jasmine must be less still for a used replacement
Surely there must be a fix though??
give this guy a phone he might be able to help.. there's loads of stuff there under the 911 section I can see a few headlights just waiting for you to buy..

911 with two headlights...
Thanks for the tips, but I reckon a few minutes with a soldering iron and some duct tape will sort it for the next 10 years!
I just think it is obscene that someone somewhere has probably had to fork out a grand for the same thing when they've had the phone call - "I'm afraid we are going to have to replace one of your headlights..."

It is the equivalent of buying a whole new washing machine because one of the knobs has come off the spindle on the front and they don't sell them separately! :frustrated:

Understandable if it was an exposed component, I guess someone in the past has been heavy handed with the strange lug config and weakened it. One thing I always have loved about Porsche is there obsession with design detail and over-engineering, RIP!
I had a similar problem when I believe the plastic surround that keeps the power pack at the back of the headlight unit was cracked and causing the headlight to stop working.
In the workshop there were a few people looking at it and three out of the four people said I would probably need a complete new headlight unit except the mechanic who said he could fit it by using a longer screw. Its been fine ever since. The fix was done free of charge.
Hope he didnt get a bollocking,He should have been promoted to dealer principal.
Ian.
