Hey all, I have a 2010
987.2
base
Cayman
. Finally installed my
GT3
control arms (Tarret rubber spec) and it seems that my car has some oddly low camber adjustment. My initial alignment from last year, prior to installing the
gt3
arms, the shop was only able to get -0.2 degrees of camber...seems low as it seems the general consensus is that close to -1.0 is possible with the stock setup.
Now, after installing the
GT3
control arms and about 18-20 mm worth of shims I am able to get a max of -2.2 degrees (I think they were able to get-2.3 on one side) which checks out. Even on Tarret's website, they claim an additional 2 degrees with a maximum of 20mm shims.
What gives though? The car has never been in an accident as far as I know (nothing documented in car fax and I've done enough work on the car to notice something implying any sort of shoddy repair). Has anyone else with a base car experience this? Just figured I would be able to get closer to -3 degrees after spending $1500 on control arms lol.
I will say, I did replace the strut top mounts prior to my initial alignment last year. I made a video of the install and verified that I did ensure the tops were oriented properly but even if I did not actively ensure this...I don't believe the holes in the strut tower would ever line up if the mounts were not oriented correctly with the arrows pointing forward and backward (and towards the outside of the car). I also replaced the diagonal arms (forks) and also had to remove the front subframe for a coolant hose replacement prior to going but as far as I know there is not much adjustment there.
Any ideas? Curious to hear if anyone else has a similar experience with their base models.
Hmmm. Do you have the OE struts? Any chance your struts are pushing ride height up a bit? That might cause a slight bit of positive camber? Or perhaps the struts tops added a bit of height/length?
Perhaps. They are the oem and as far as I know, the original struts with 85k miles on them. Probably will go coilovers or maybe a nice cup kit at some point and I know the drop will get me where I want to be camber wise. I just expected to get more even with the stock struts :/
Yah, its likely your ride height that's holding you back...
I agree with the post above. I'm also on stock 2007S springs, and got -2.4 degrees of camber in front maximizing the shims in my GT-3 arms. Other variants of springs (
PASM
, R) ride lower, as do most coilovers. This seems like it's about right though, according to tire temps with my one track day.
Good to know. I just wanted to be sure that my car wasn't super off. Most posts I have seen regarding stock alignment settings don't seem to mention lowered ride height though. I guess at the end of the day it isn't a big deal since I know it can always be changed in the future.
