The jig has excellent resale value which is why the price didn't worry me, I purchased mine second hand, it had only been used on two snapped studs previously and it'll be up for sale once I've finished too.

Is it possible/advisable to flush these engines before refilling with nice clean oil?

Suggestion
I don't see the point of changing the filter unless you need to take off an oil feed, you are losing filter materiel as this is shorter than the standard one, I can't see an added benefit, no mater what the sales bumf says..

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

It's just had a diagnostic and ramp check. No real issues. The car had a SS Dansk Super SOund sports system fitted a few months before we got it. But the old headers were used and are now pretty crusty.
Was thinking of replacing the Exhaust headers. maybe something like these.

Or sticking with Dansk

What recommendations/experience do others have?
Oil filtration
Was considering replacing the normal Porsche filter with one of these adaptors and a K&N Gold filter. The logic seems undeniable and protecting the ageing engine from any contaminants for these tiny prices seems like a no brainer to me. Does anyone have any experience of using this type of system. It would seem very sensible as a form of preventative maintenance along with 5K oil changes.

With a set of these attached to the K&N Filter.

Also fitting a Magnetic sump plug would also seem sensible. These seemed to be the best I could find. This is pretty convincing:

I think that's the right size.
Thoughts welcome.

Good list bud. Just be mindful that your manifold bolts might not all come out, which will be more expenditure whatever route you choose to go down sorting that. I'm currently doing this job on mine, laying underneath the back end drilling and tapping away. Lovely ðŸ˜ðŸ˜„
I'll be fitting stainless manifold studs or something like that, as this forum recommends. Top gear make nice stuff, I have the sports silencers which are excellent and I'll be buying those manifolds you've shown next.
Yes, I did wonder whether that's why they were not replaced at the time the SS Sports exhaust was fitted. I have read a few horror stories on here about the manifold studs/bolts. I guess I will be needing one of these kits also.

But hopefully not one of these:

Does anyone know how we get the 911uk discount at Design911?
Another question was that the engine is listed as needing 12.5 Litres but an oil and filter change only needs 8.75? Where is the rest hiding and how do I get it out as I suspect it has been a while since a full service was done and I wasn't to get as much old oil out as possible.
Is it possible/advisable to flush these engines before refilling with nice clean oil?
Cheers

The Stomski jig is excellent mate, extremely accurate. I have new Porsche manifold bolts like you've shown but have decided to use studs instead. I'd much rather be cutting nuts off studs in the future than going through this painful procedure again 😆
Thanks Alex, Yes I know the change quantity is listed as 8.75 with a new filter.
Another example of 'internet facts' maybe. The engine oil capacity of the 96/03 engine is widely circulated as 12.5Litres. Indeed if you put Porsche 996 Oil Capacity into Google you get the response on the attached picture.
Consulting the owners handbook then all that is listed is the change amount of 8.5 or 8.75 with a new filter. Which should in theory equal the max mark on the dipstick.
When we get to this in the next couple of weeks, I think I'll let it drain for a few days until it stops dripping with the filter off. Then start from there with nice clean oil and the new LN filter adaptor and K&N Gold screw on. I am surprised there is no requirement to prefill the filter.
I am looking forward to having a good look in the existing filter to see what might be lurking in there.
Do you know if there is a coupon code for Design911 for the service parts. Or is there a better place to get them.
Looks like the basics of Air Filter, Oil Filter, PolyRib belt etc. are all easily DIY. Spark plugs look like a pain and coil packs. Not sure about the oil seperator that looks like a bit of a pig. On face value the parts will cost almost as much as taking it to an indie for a major service!
Do you do your own servicing?
Cheers

Hi mate, I don't have a link to any studs as yet, I'm looking into that though. I'm not worried about approved studs, there's some clever guys on here who really know their stuff, I'd go with their recommendations on studs over using Porsche bolts, it's a sensible mod that makes sense and a mod that lots of owners do from what I've read.
The jig has excellent resale value which is why the price didn't worry me, I purchased mine second hand, it had only been used on two snapped studs previously and it'll be up for sale once I've finished too.
I do all my own servicing and repairs, very logically engineered cars, nice to work on.... unless you're drilling and tapping manifold bolts that is 😆 actually even that isn't too bad, just gotta take your time.

A magnetic sump plug is a must IMO, mine has been fitted for years and always picks up some microscopic swarf every oil change, which would normally be circulating your engine.
Do NOT use any kind of aftermarket flush on these cars .
An overnight drain and at best about 9 litres refill .. they hold more oil than that but it will never come out unless an engine rebuild ..
The design of the engine means oil sits in chambers that won't drain out .. use a flush and that will sit in the same chambers .
Exhaust manifolds .. yes they rot and look awful .. i would say don't touch unless you have an issue .. they go on for years looking bad with no problems .
If changing then bolts will snap or round off .. pretty normal .
Fitting a more radical manifold then to me .. you will need the car remapped .. exhaust back pressures will have altered from standard .. my feeling there that a remap is needed .
K&N filters .. up to you .. i don't think it makes enough difference to be worth the cost but is a choice for the customer ... looks pretty ugly as well ... IMHO .
Coil packs if not cracked then they don't need changing .. i'm not a huge fan of " replace all 6 " .. if it aint broke then it aint broke .
If you wish to just throw money at the car then i'm not going to argue .. its your choice .. i just don't like items being replaced for no reason or if they look ugly .. always a better place to spend money on a car !
As always Sage advice Iain. The headers really are seriously crusty. The K&N oil filter is no more expensive than the original apart from the initial full flow adaptor. It logically made sense to me. Just trying to get this car as good as it can be mechanically.
