What do u guys think of cooper vs. the
Michelin
ps2’s. 17 inch. Or recommend something else?
It probably depends on how you're going to drive it. Are you tracking? Daily driver? Weather conditions?
I went to a performance tire shop in the DC area and for my daily driver, year-round tires, they strongly recommended Continental DWS 06 over the
Michelin PS4
AS.
DWS FTW.
Michelin
is good, too... but more expensive in my experience.
Haven't really used Cooper myself, but a few cars I drove with them, I was not impressed.
Keep in mind, BRAND is less important than MODEL. For example, the
Conti
DWS is a great tire, but my friend tried the ProContact version to save a little money, and he had sidewall bubbles constantly.
Similarly, I had a Yokohama AVID H-something in the past - good tire. I had Yokohama Avid V4 on my previous car, and they got sidewall bubbles when you looked at them funny.
I've been using DWS on everything I have (even the slow cars) because it's such a good tire, great even in the snow, and costs about the same as other "cheaper" tires.
I looked on continental site didn’t have any
17 inch listed. 06 boxster. Base. 17 Inch
Having used Tirerack.com for many years, they are my first go-to for specs and ratings and their ratings for the Michelins seem to be right up there. Inputting the info for your car and tire size it only returns the two you mentioned, MIichelin and Cooper. Seems that the 17” is the limiting factor for choices.
In general I like to stick with continental or
Michelin
. For most tires continental is more compliant and
Michelin
gives better turn in with a harder sidewall.
Out of interest - why are you considering PS2s? They're a 20 year old design now. Lots of tyre technology bumps since then.
When I bought mine it came with brand new N rated P Zeros on it (also an old design, like the PS2) - they were dangerously bad in the wet. Swiftly replaced the PZs with non-N SportContact 7s and holy moly, the grip is incredible! Both in the wet (which matters in the UK) and the dry.
I managed to get my SC7s (19 inch) for £700, which I thought was a great deal considering the PS4 was £980ish - I shopped around and found a site that was offering 15% off 4 Continental tyres.
On my previous non-
Porsche
cars, with 17/18 inch wheels, I've run the PS4 and Eagle F1 SuperSport - both performed amazingly.
You can't really go wrong with the main brand UUHP tyres (except for P Zeros)
@schwinn
- Ah I see, I've never encountered that issue before! Just had a browse on blackcircles.com (massive UK based tyre supplier) and yep - all choices for the rears are all older tyres;
235/50 R17 W (96) - Continental Ultra Contact, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, Michelin PS2 & Primacy 3.
That's a shame really, I love having decent tyres so this would force me into buying new wheels.
Agreed, that's another option - new wheels... good point!
Either way, OP shouldn't waste their time finding the existing size, and should find a better alternative. If you want help on this, let us know... we can dive in deeper...
What I am putting on my new to me 2008 Boxster S.
I usually buy Michelin’s for my other cars.
Most effective ad ever, that baby sitting in the tire….certainly has influenced my buying decisions for decades.
