Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace cps' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'its the fuel pressure system' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check being the first' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
Offhand i now suspect its the fuel pressure system ..

Just couldn't get to the bolt so I booked it into the garage, it's started fine a couple of times since disconnecting the battery and when I drove it to the garage this morning I was thinking it had sorted itself and I was wasting my time.

Perhaps disconnect the -ve battery terminal fror a few mins to poss reset anything upset, while you're waiting.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
When I drove the car last week it cut out a couple of times but would restart ok, took it for a longer run the next day and it was fine. Got in today and it won't start at all, cranks over fine but that's it.
Reading around the main suspects appear to be the crank position sensor or the fuel pump but wanted to see what people think before I start spending.
When I do crank it the rev needle doesn't move so does this point to the crank sensor? When I turn the key to the second position I can hear the pump working but it does sound a bit strained (though I can't remember what it should sound like).
Or of course any other ideas
Thanks all
Very similar symptoms to mine, it would take a good 5-10 seconds of cranking with the accel pedal fully pressed for it to start and then would stall at junctions etc. New crank sensor (about £55 IIRC) cured it.
There seems to be a multitude of numbers for them.
I got mine of ebay, search for item number 232414227569 £57.86 delivered.
Edit: mine is a 3.4 c2 so may be different.
Thanks, I think the 3.4 one is different.
In case anyone else needs one the part number is Bosch 98660611204, cheapest I found was £57.14 from Bestpartstore.co.uk
The rev counter should move on cranking but only by a small amount .. it's not really a proper test but can give you an indication that the cps has failed .
Cranking and its between 100 - 200 rpm which is on the low side for a gauge but in theory it should move or flicker.
Cheapest test .. buy a noid light kit .. unplug an injector , fit a noid light and crank it .. the light will flash if the cps is ok .
To test a fuel pump and you really need a pressure gauge on the rail ..
Pretty rare for a pump to totally die though .. poor fuel delivery yes but not totally dead .
Neither of these will throw a fault code as the car can't monitor these ..
The car seeing a cps signal is how it actually knows the car is spinning over .

To be honest it does sound like that .. i prefer a test to confirm to try and save people money as a noid light set is pretty cheap but you have a sensor coming so fingers crossed for you .
I think it will fix your issue .
Mixed bag today, the new part finally arrived so I got straight on it. As the car wouldn't start I was stuck with where I last parked it on my sloping drive. Access is very tight but all went well until the retaining bolt would not budge at all, the end result being I've rounded the allen head!
Thinking I'd have to get it recovered to a garage I tried Jess911's advice and it fired up. Hopefully tomorrow I can move it to get on the ramps and give me a bit more access to get the bolt out 🤞
Just couldn't get to the bolt so I booked it into the garage, it's started fine a couple of times since disconnecting the battery and when I drove it to the garage this morning I was thinking it had sorted itself and I was wasting my time. Anyway garage phoned earlier to say it was all done so went down to pick it up only to get in it and it wouldn't start! Exactly the same symptoms as before. I've left it with the garage but walking home I thought does it need to be reset after fitting a new one or maybe it's something else?!
Its going to be difficult to answer this without sounding like i'm criticizing you .. trust me i have no intention of doing that .. i'm trying to answer a question is all .
When a car wont start then we perform a few tests .. fault check being the first .. no fault codes and that leans towards a system the car cant monitor ..
This being CPS and Fuel pressure .
If a car wont start then a quick test is a noid light in an injector plug .. if it flashes then the CPS system is fine ..
Next would be a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail .. have we got fuel pressure .
Then we move onto spark , compression etc etc ..
Basic checks .
garage has replaced the CPS .. it would seem that this isn't the fault but you still have the wiring from the CPS to the DME and the DME itself .
Offhand i now suspect its the fuel pressure system .. my feeling is perhaps the relay ..
BUT .. any garage will fault find .. as we eliminate items we move onto others ..
Your garage will now be doing that .. they will find the fault .
All well and good me sitting here and trying to say whats wrong with a car but i'm only going with the usual faults .. fuel pump relays are an unusual fault .. i've seen maybe 2 in all my years ..
There are other things it can be so im afraid its just a case of working through them one by one .
I'm not a fan of throwing bits at a car to try and rectify an issue .. i prefer fault finding .. mainly as it saves you guys some money .
Intermittent faults are always the worst to find ... i prefer a car thats broken down .. its simple then .
Thanks for your help deMort, certainly no offence taken. I enjoy working on my cars but I'm not a mechanic and as you say tracing an intermittent fault can be a pain and highlights my limitations so I'm happy to hand it over to the experts.
I'll report back shortly, hopefully with some good news!
