So I have a November build date. Wanted the Short shifter, but it was available yet. Already tried to put in a change order and the dealer said they can't.
They are willing to install it after the fact, but they cannot order a Cayman short shifter yet. What they think they can order NOW is a Boxster S short shifter. Does anyone know for sure if that IS really the same as the 'Cayman' short shifter?
I'd appreciate any input from anyone. I really want this in there and realize I might need to take delivery and have them install it later if it's different. My guess is that it is the same as the Boxster Short Shifter, but of course the dealer didn't know for sure.
A few of the latest reviews seem to think the stock Cayman shifter feels the same as astock Boxster S shifter......nothing more, and I would tend to agree with that even though some early reports stated throws would be 'improved'........whatever was meant by that. Doesn't mean that there aren't slight differences though. Looking at the tequipment catalog the part number is 997 424 983 00........can anyone cross-ref this number with the Boxster version?........or being a 997 number maybe they are all the same??

Update.....
After looking at renntech.org it appears that the short shifter with the part number 997 424 983 00 is for both the 997 and 987.....and the Cayman.
Thank you very much. That makes sense looking at it that way. I feel much better about having him order it now! It's so great to have this forum to find out answers so quickly. Can't wait to get this thing!
As Atlas_Croc said, they have the same part numbers.
i'm in for a manual but not sure if i should choose the 'short shifter' option. i heard the maual gearbox is already good enough. cld anyone pls give me some advice? in my case, i'm doing town driving most of the time (unfortunately)

I have driven 987s and 997s with and without the sport shifter. The normal shifter is very nice and much improved over 986 and 996 versions. The throws are not really long, but not that short either. IMO the sport shifter is better though......throws are much shorter and crisper. It does require a bit extra effort to move the lever......but it wasn't anything to me and probably most others would be the same.
At first I was a doubter for this option until I tried it.........now I believe it to be a top option to consider. My car has a Nov build so I couldn't get it, but I will retro it to my Cayman when it arrives for sure!
See other threads on this same subject. I kept trying every couple of weeks and was able to get the short shifter option into my order just before the car went into production. Having driven /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/drive.gifmy 911 both with and without the SS, I wouldn't go without this valuable upgrade.
My order for the SS was accepted in the last week of October for a November 21 completion date, thanks to Uber for letting us know as soon as his order was accepted.

Thanks a lot for all youropinion, in favor of the SS. My dealer had suggested it but i was a bit concerned before because 1) the catalogue specifically states that it may behard to shift when cold & 2) it costs ~ US$4k as an option in HK (though I'd not have chosen 'tiptronic' even if it were a free option, it just takes the power/fun away).
Anyway, the SS does not get a lot of press/review, so it's great to have feedback from drivers who have experience in it.
