Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I am occasionally experiencing a inconvenience where it my 987 fails to detect the key and enable engine start. I know that changing the battery in the key fob will probably help, but the issue has made me wonder: can the system be bypassed entirely? And if so, what steps should be be followed?

POST 2Original post

I'm sure it's not easy to disable it - after all, the whole point is to prevent theft. I would imagine it is an ECU programming issue that could only be done by a dealer.

POST 3Original post

I don't believe the battery is involved in the immobilizer... there is a small RFID-type chip in the key and THAT'S what is used to pass the immobilizer. The RFID-type chip is energized by a coil in the ignition, and provides the code needed to start the car. As mentioned, there is not likely an easy way to disable this, as it's really integrated into the car, for obvious reasons. You may have a bad coil or ignition assembly - I would try testing or replacing that, to see if it can fix the intermittency.

POST 4Original post

I have a 987.1 , but assume the same would apply to the .2 models as well... It's very easy and cheap to replace the CR2032 battery. As others have mentioned above, though, it may be an RFID type thing and the battery isn't a problem. That's been my experience when my remote wouldn't unlock the door but the car starts just fine. Here's a 4-pack for $5 on Amazon. They are Duracell and sold directly by Duracell — not some store getting rid of 3-year-old inventory. Your key needs only 1 battery, so you can keep both your keys fresh for the next 8 years with this. Best of luck with your starting!
