I had something similar a few years ago on the way home from a road trip, it turned out to be a faulty spark plug, it limited my top speed to 112mph almost like a rev limiter.

Have a 1998 996 tiptro which significantly misfires at high speed on kickdown and/or heavy accelerating in the high rev range. It's ok when being driven sedately. Does anyone have an idea what it may be before I book it in for analysis which may be quite expensive just to find out. Cheers.

Fuel pump and fuel pressure .. the pump cannot deliver enough fuel so it feels strangled at high rpm .. like an anchor being thrown out of a window . Not possible to test so a replacement is needed to rule it out or fix the issue .

It was fine at lower speeds but when pushing it, it didn't seem to cope. It was only a few thousand miles old so it took me a while to diagnose it because I eliminated it from being at fault with it being fairly new.
