Is it really necessary to replace the Tensioner Lever (expensive)? I'm planning to replace the belt, rollers, tensioner and bolts due to age (2nd belt for 2011 model). The records I have, was just the belt replaced at 60,000 mi. Currently just under 105K mi.
TIA,
Bruce
I didn't when i replaced the belt on my 2009 S at 160,000kms... it didn't make sense to me to replace something that was a beefy chunk of metal. I just put a new tensioner (since mine was leaking oil), roller, and belt.
unique
thanks for the response. I’m thinking the same thing.
Same here. Just the tensioner, which had failed, roller and belt.
Well, I just finished the job yesterday. Really straight forward. I couldn’t see any reason to replace the tensioner lever. The pivot hole just has a steel sleeve for the bolt to slide through. Unless it’s damaged, there is no need to replace it. Replaced the belt, roller, and dampener.
I used the
conti
belt and had no problems getting it on. However, I did have to push the 30mm wrench enough to displace the tranny cables so that the tensioner would compress enough.
I just did this on my
987.2 Cayman
. After some cursing trying to slip the belt over the lip on the
alternator
pulley I realized the easiest pulley to slip the belt on, was the pulley
next
to the tensioner bolt which has no lip at all.
30mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet, 18mm socket with an extension to slip over the ratchet handle for more leverage if needed.
Def pull the Belt over the idler pulley. Sorry I forgot to mention it.
I just did mine yesterday. Tensioner had failed, so I replaced it, and the roller. I also replaced the tensioner arm, though it was probably unnecessary. It was easy on a
987.2
, though I wish I had a longer ratchet handle or extension to make it easier to remove the bolts.
I did have one a-ha moment that saved me a headache - I started to install the tensioner arm / tensioner without the roller, thinking I would attach the roller once the tensioner was in place, but smartened up and attached the roller to the tensioner arm while it was still out of the car. Much easier to do that way.
I did also replace all the bolts. I've seen enough posts about bolts shearing off that I figured it was worth the extra few bucks.
I love to hear a success story!
and I really like that you did it right with new fasteners..
