Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Topped up with about a litre of water & when I tightened the cap it sort of went tight, then loosened slightly & then went fully tight.
Leading evidence: 'Tighten cap it sort of went tight' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check level again later once it's cooled down' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'll check the level again later once it's cooled down but certainly no drips.

in that case the bypass valve with the metal clip on it and on top of the coolant bottle will not rise when the car has been run from cold and upto operating temp .

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I tightened it up to just before it went loose, it was good for a few days then it worked itself loose.
Related to my earlier 'first drive' post.
Let the car cool down & had a look at it again. Coolant tank has part number ending in 03 & cap has part number ending in 04. Guessing they're not original?
Topped up with about a litre of water & when I tightened the cap it sort of went tight, then loosened slightly & then went fully tight. GT3 Owl suggested earlier that the cap may have been loose, he may be right. I'll try it again & see what happens.
Question. If the coolant tank was cracked would it leak when the car was sitting or only when the system was pressurised?
I guess it could leak sitting or pressurised, definitely more chance of leakage when she is hot and pressurised, place some dry paper towel around where you can get, this may give you a better idea, also you are not overfilling the system??
if the coolant cap is leaking you will have a white crusty material on the inside.
Modern antifreeze will seal small leaks .. thats the white crusty deposit doing its job .
if the tank is leaking then it will be at the seams ( where the two halves of the tank are joined ) .. if the coolant lvl is below this then it wont leak .
If you have a leak then the system will not pressurise .. in that case the bypass valve with the metal clip on it and on top of the coolant bottle will not rise when the car has been run from cold and upto operating temp .
if it does rise then the leak is minor .
Thermostat pipe is a common area for small leaks .
Well topped it up last night & took it for a drive today, about 20 miles, & all appears to be OK.
Fingers crossed! I'll check the level again later once it's cooled down but certainly no drips.
I think the problem was that the cap had not been put on tight enough, as someone had suggested, so good call that man.
My coolant tank cap did the same thing. When you tightened it, it would go tight then when you tried to just give it that final twist it would go loose. I tightened it up to just before it went loose, it was good for a few days then it worked itself loose.
I read this is a common issue with the threads on pattern part tanks. I changed it for an OE tank and no more issues.
Mine did the same thing but when it went loose I turned it again & tightened up properly. Possibly cross threaded. I'm going to get a new cap as a precaution.
