Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Put them back into the cluster then loosely wire the cluster to the three wiring harnesses in the car to check they work ok, then put dash back together.

Remove instrument pod, at the rear of the pod you will see a long row of Black holders at the base, ignore these, just use the thin long nose pliers to remove the 3 Cream coloured holders.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, come up with another modification, hope no one thinks I am chavving up my car, they are only little mods. This one changes the colour of the three lower sections of the cluster - mileage, trip computer & clock which normally glow boring Orange. This one takes less than 2 hours to acomplish. Parts needed = 3 x R286R Red 1.2w dash bulbs (buy a few incase of failures or breaking while modding) available here: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/r2...e-in-blue-green-red-amber-and-c-pr-16363.html Tools required: T20 torx, pref on a long shaft or screwdriver type. Thin long-nose pliers Normal pliers Soldering iron + solder (for a perfect job) Remove instrument pod, at the rear of the pod you will see a long row of Black holders at the base, ignore these, just use the thin long nose pliers to remove the 3 Cream coloured holders. Once out, the easiest way to remove the clear bulbs is to crush the with the big pliers (mind your eyes) then the side plates slide out easy. Simply wire in the new Red ones, carefully pushing them back down into place using the pliers. Take note of how they originally sat. Put them back into the cluster then loosely wire the cluster to the three wiring harnesses in the car to check they work ok, then put dash back together. The result is REALLY good, my car has Silver dials, the numbers light up in Orange and the LCD's are bright Red. I have taken a photo but it doesn't come out in the right colour I suppose due to my camera lens? Trust me it is worth it. You could try other colours but don't forget you will be mixing with an Orange filter so Red becomes Red but Blue would become Purple (I think)

POST 3Original post

I bought a kit of white LEDs for my '98 instrument clluster from www.porscheleds.com . Never got round to fitting them (if anyone is interested drop me a PM).

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Another naff camera shot... trust me the bits that look Purple here arevery bright Red.

POST 5Original post

I bought the same kit, tried fitting them but they just didn't work, threw them away in the end...

POST 6Original post

Did you try them both ways round? They are LEDs, so will only work if you put them in the slot one way round. Trouble is they will fit either way, so you can get the wrong polarity. The instructions suggest some trial and error is required.

POST 7Original post

Yup, even did the marking like they suggested so you knew which way you round you had tried. They were very 'flimsy' if that's the right word and the contacts with their 'wing' bits didn't connect correctly with the housing. You could see the difference when comparing with the OEM bulbs.

POST 9Original post

Try them, I might have had a bad batch. It's just a pain getting the cluster off without scratching the dash so I never tried again...

POST 11Original post

They don't fit the later cluster, so they are no use to me. (TT has the new cluster like the facelift Carrera). I assume they must have been for a previous 996 of yours, because they wouldn't fit a 2002. Anyway, TB has first refusal on a no-work, no-pay basis!
