Suggestion

Agree that the test drive could be the determining factor - naturally i'd lean towards the lower kms - without the IMS being done - gives you a good clean slate to install the IMS you want (retrofit or solution)

#1 has a lot fewer miles, and you could probably negotiate it down some due to wanting to replace the IMS/RMS.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im looking at 2 very similar 2002 seal grey, black interior, manual C4Ss. Im curious as to what you would choose. I have not done a PPI on either yet so lets assume no major issues for the sake of this hypothetical question. The big difference is mileage and ims/rms being done. Which would you choose, which is the better deal? Car 1 2002 C4S original pride $85,080 Manual seal grey metallic black full leather 1 owner 39K miles of which last 8K miles done in late 9 years Clean car fax no IMS or RMS work done garage kept $27K Car 2 2002 C4S original pride $85,065 Manual seal grey metallic black full supple leather 2 owner 66K miles Clean car fax IMS and RMS completed garage kept $25K

POST 2Original post

I would go option 1. Im not a fan of the supple leather as it seems to wrinkle and looked stretched out. Also you can choose the shop to do the IMS work or choose to do the solution if you wanted to. Either car seems good either way though. Win win

POST 3Original post

If there are repair records, I would go with car 2.

POST 4Original post

Drive both of them! Factor in costs of imsb and probably clutch as well. Both seem good deals. Any difference in options such as sports exhaust? good luck. I love my 03 c4s. It was low mileage (21700) and only driven 8k in 10+ years prior to me buying it. Ive put nearly 8k miles on it in 5+ months without a single issue. They need to be driven and driven hard.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16069623

Both do not have sports exhaust. Clutch was done on car 2. Yes, factoring in costs but I feel like both with have different costs. Car 1 is low mileage and might have longer before suspension work but would want IMs/rms. Car 2 has a lot already done and is still good mileage but 30K more none the less. Both are great cars honestly.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16069612

Yes, car 2 has full set of records.

POST 7Original post

Either car. Just understand the real differences. Car 1 may look like a better buy, but considering the low mileage it may take several thousands to get the maintenance up to date, tires (assuming they are old). cars that are not driven tend to break due age rather than mileage. It may "look" perfect and get a good PPI, then when the miles get put on stuff starts to happen like water pumps leaks, radiators leak, minor issues, but costly none the same. Car 2 If it has the better records and has been constantly driven will most likely cost less to upkeep and maintain for the first year or 2.

POST 8Original post

You can't go wrong with either of them. They are both below market value atm and seem like great deals. (wish I had found deals like this when I was looking). The second car sounds like the better deal on paper (by a good bit IMO) but that's without PPIs or driving either of them. Drive both and see which feels better.

POST 9Original post

So much choice! Agree that the test drive could be the determining factor - naturally i'd lean towards the lower kms - without the IMS being done - gives you a good clean slate to install the IMS you want (retrofit or solution)

POST 10Original post

Car 2 all day long. While they both have what would be low miles for a 18 yr old car, Car 1 is questionably low, and it seems like it went for long stretches of not being driven at all...

POST 12Original post

How long ago was the IMS changed in car #2? Was it recently? Records are nice to have. Low miles do not necessarily mean good for suspension stuff. Time is a factor as well. Sitting in a garage is not good for a car. I've heard a lot of issues with garage queens. I do not care for supple leather either, but that is personal. They do seem below market so good luck. You will like the C4S.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16069685

how does the 2WD handle the canadian winters?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16069768

I read that the C2's do pretty good with the correct tires and less than front spoiler depth of snow. Remember the all wheel drive of the C4S is NOT the same as four wheel drive. As I understand it the function is more for turn in on the track. However, with the minimum 5% directed to the front it would probably help snow performance too. I have read stories over the year where dudes got stuck and burned up the disc that transfers the power to the front by trying to get out of being stuck by spinning the tires unnecessarily. So both cars have their winter limits...IMHO.

POST 17Original post

Where are located for those prices? I am thinking I maybe paid to much for a 69k one for 25K without IMS done. Immediately ended up at 28 after IMS and clutch. If your in California, I will feel better.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16069768

With a set of winter tires it will do wonderfully. All the wight in the back and over the rear tires will give really good tractino in the snow. Jut don't do anything stupid or the back end will come around regardless of 2 or 4 wd.

POST 19Original post

Hard to compare two cars sight unseen, but if all things are equal, I'd lean toward the one with the best maintenance history/documentation (it wasn't clear to me whether vehicle 1 has records). If there isn't a clear winner, I'd lean toward the one with lower mileage. I'd rather do the IMS bearing during my ownership. I'd go for the IMS Solution if it was a car I hoped to keep.

POST 20Original post

I would lean towards the second as the IMS has been done recent enough that you don't have to worry about it. Still probably depend on a PPI and test drive though.

POST 21Original post

Both are worth investigating, meaning not enough info listed to give a clear cut winner. If possible, Id wanna our eyes on and drive both that could very easily make up youre mind for you. If not, get vin #s for both and plug them in here . There may be a lot of extra options the other does not, which make deciding easier in addition to the aforementioned. Good luck, they are great cars.

POST 22Original post

#2. If it all checks out then it should be fine. A lower mileage car is not necessarily better. I bought my 911 with 108K miles but most parts that need replacing was already done. She runs like a champ.

POST 23Original post

How long are you going to keep it? If it's a while, you'll want the IMS Solution installed. If option 2 doesn't have it, then you're going to have to spend the money to get it put in on either car a some point.

POST 24Original post

Trevor, as a previous owner of 02 c4S, it sounds like both cars were well maintained, albeit both sound like they also were "garage queens" of a sort.....i.e. not driven regularly. Given the info you have provided I would go with car #1 as if you plan to do the IMS and RMS, putting a clutch in at the same time will be relatively in-expensive. When complete, you will have a car with 2/3 the miles of car #2, and as was mentioned I too am not a fan of the Supple Leather option as it tends to wrinkle and stretch effecting the "look" of the interior. Lastly, I would suggest you get a qualified Porsche shop to perform a pre-sale inspection so you get the un-biased view of the cars overall condition to ensure you have the whole picture of the condition of the car(s), especially if this your first Porsche. Good Luck with the decision and enjoy the journey....I miss mine often even at 74 yrs on the my clock. Demosan

Age is just a number. Ain't no reason not have one if you can still get in and out of it!

POST 26Original post

Toss a coin. 66k miles and (if you're into that sorta thing) the IMS stuff is piece of mind. #1 has a lot fewer miles, and you could probably negotiate it down some due to wanting to replace the IMS/RMS. can't go wrong!

POST 28Original post

It would be nice to have the model year, but absent that: #2. The mileage is in the sweet spot and you like the color. Having the maintenance history is critical to ultimate resale. The mileage on #3 is really too low and portends problems.
