And if the remaining say 0.25 quart of old oil is so bad it needs to come out then the oil is way past its change by date anyhow.

One of my first oil changes I did with the Boxster I did the oil change with the rear of the car on the ramps and then after the oil had drained until the oil was coming out in a very very thin thread, I raised the front of the Boxster to bring the car level and there was no additional oil pouring out of the oil drain hole.

Great plan with the ramps - not only do you get to change the oil you get to skip the weight room for a work out - just watch for splinters.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

With my 02 Boxster there's no difference in the amount of oil that drains with the car on ramps and on an incline or with the car level.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Living in a condo, it is very difficult to work on my 996. I wanted to give it an oil change and there is no way in hell I'm paying $200. I work for a construction company so I came up with a solution today. What do you think? BTW it was the first oil change I have ever done! lol.

POST 2Original post

The ramp looks a little sketch...but otherwise, it works! sean

POST 4Original post

I just back mine up to the garage lip. That is plenty of room.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 8375756

Buy a set of Rhino Ramps. I have a set and have used them with my Boxster, Cayman S, and Turbo backing the car up on the ramps to gain room to perform a DIY oil change. The ramps work just fine and are small enough I store them under my desk here at the office. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 7Original post

Good for you, but you can make it far simpler with less wood. Very creative.

POST 9Original post

+2 on the rhino ramps. I use them for all maintenance on the 996.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was going to buy some of those then my cheapness genes took over. I will get some next time for sure. It was a bit of a workout. BTW, I think it was engineered brilliantly!!

POST 11Original post

I love Dunnage !! thats the way we do it old skool !!

POST 12Original post

Dunnage. Haven't heard that term in years, I thinking maritime background. Great plan with the ramps - not only do you get to change the oil you get to skip the weight room for a work out - just watch for splinters.

POST 13Original post

Nope. Nope. I think his home made ramp is cool! The guy is in construction, so I'm certain this stuff was just laying around anyway. Heck look at all those trucks in the background. And he probably has enough orange safety cones around to set up a full autocross course in that parking lot. Nope. I give him an A++. A lot more fun to set that up than to pay someone $200 to do it for him. Yup:

POST 14Original post

I back mine on some brick pavers. It's works great.

POST 15Original post

Good creativity... just be careful on the work area and watch out for nails!!!

POST 16Original post

Rhino ramps don't work for 295 sized tires, and unless you get the super long ones, they don't clear the front bumper. Also, they're too high to put in front of the rear wheels. I found out the hard way...

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dunnage. Nice, you know the lingo. Those are cribbing block. It's fancy dunnage!

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks man! Those ramps look weak but they are 3/8" A-516 gr.70 boiler steel. Very strong stuff. I work for a pressure vessel repair company and I had to inspect a vessel this morning and decided "what the hell" I'm here might as well change the oil and get paid at the same time I even used a calibrated torque wrench!!

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 8376727

Don't know the exact tire dimensions/callout on my Turbo's rear tires (the tires are the stock 18" size though) but I can fit the ramps right up against the rear tires and while the clearance between the car's body (bumper cover) and ramp is close, there is no contact. Granted I can't use the ramps at the front of the car (nor my Boxster even) but I seldom need to raise the front of the car. I was remiss though -- your post reminded me -- in not mentioning that one should arrange a test/trial fitting before buying the ramps. I did, that is I asked the store clerk if I could take a ramp out to my car to see if it would clear the car's body and promised to not use the ramp nor even scuff it up by treating it roughly during the test/trial fitting. The clerk had no objections and after I confirmed the ramps would work at the rear of the car I bought the pair. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 23Original post

with the rear on the Rhino.... how much oil is still in the pan since the car is not level? .25 quart?... good work on the ramp.... a bit over-engineered, but hey.... you are getting paid for it, cant beat that.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 8377378

Can't say with the 996 cause I don't have one. I have a 996 Turbo but it has a dry sump oiling system and the crankcase and the oil tank are shaped there's no way any oil is retained under the mild slope the ramps create. With my 02 Boxster there's no difference in the amount of oil that drains with the car on ramps and on an incline or with the car level. One of my first oil changes I did with the Boxster I did the oil change with the rear of the car on the ramps and then after the oil had drained until the oil was coming out in a very very thin thread, I raised the front of the Boxster to bring the car level and there was no additional oil pouring out of the oil drain hole. These engines are designed to ensure oil drains to the lowest part of the sump or crank case or oil tank under all but the most extreme out of level conditions, so extreme they'd not be encountered under normal circumstances and can't occur when using the Rhino Ramps. Also, an oil drain even with the car level does not result in all oil draining from the engine. There is at least several quarts of 'old' oil still in the engine. Even if the ramp technique left another 0.25 quart of oil in the engine, it wouldn't be a significant amount to matter to the engine any. And if the remaining say 0.25 quart of old oil is so bad it needs to come out then the oil is way past its change by date anyhow. Sincerely, Macster.
