The beauty of using the GT3 fender liner is that it automatically seals up the downward air flow in the fender liner and only gives it one exit on the inside of the wheel well facilitating better air flow direction, possible better radiator cooling, bettet brake cooling and possibly a reduction in front end lift.

Anybody know where I can source this same lip that's on the 996 Supercup car? I love how subtle it is. Can't seem to find anything online that's similar...

I have one of the Demonspeed 996.2 GT3 Cup Spoilers. It‘s identical to the Porsche Motorsport GT3 Cup spoiler I currently have on my car. Porsche stopped manufacturing them and Demonspeed stepped up and made a quality copy. It is just as flexible as the original. It bolts onto the 996.2 GT3 and 996.2 aerokit bumpers. Porsche Motorsport GT3 Cup lip spoiler: It can be fitted to the standard 996.1 but will require drilling the bumper and/or spoiler. You will also have to trim the ends of the spoiler several inches. Heres the street 996.2 GT3/aerokit lip: GT-Racing has one that may fit the 996.1 better. https://www.gt-racing.com/996-gt3-st...ter-part-661s/

The 996.2 Supercup lip is an unpaintable flexible black rubber lip. The 996.2 Aerokit(GT3 street) lip is a paint-required hard unflexible plastic lip. They both bolt-on but the design is slightly different on the side.

POST 6Original post

Wow interesting pricing glad I have had a new 996.1 SuperCup lip in the attic and a new 996.1 Aero one on the shelf for years 😀 Rich

POST 18Original post

The one i just bought from a local PCA member is 996-505-986-92. Its for the 996.2 GT3. Flexible and smaller than the demonspeed lip. It should be able to take alot more scraping and bumping than the demonspeed. FVD at one time made a flexible one. I believe you can order them thru the dealership but it may be upwards of 600 bucks. It may be worth the money for durability.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 20387721

I will post pictures. It will be in the spring. First thing i gotta do is replace the front wheel fender liners with GT3 fender liners and remove the radiator shroud to get better airflow thru the wheel wells versus what the Carrera does which is pushes the air down in front of the wheels. I will test that out on the track in April to see if there is any difference in the front end. Then I will bolt on the GT3 rubber splitter to see what suspension adjustments I have to make. Its not a big lip, but it will probably be enough to push the front end down a little bit. But we will see.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 20387741

Is swapping to the GT3 liner required to make the lip fit? Or is that for improved cooling purposes?

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 20388431

It is not a requirement for the lip. You can just bolt on the rubber lip to the underside of your bumper. I decided to go to the GT fender liner for potentially better front end airflow into the wheel well instead of pushing the air down in front of the wheels which may or may not promote lift at very high speeds on the track. Unfortunately, no available factory data on any of the aero for any 996 model. So its a buy it and test it exercise. I never felt it that important to test/change it since I have been tracking the car since 2004, but figured, why not in 2025 to see. Its the GT3 lip nor any aero that I purposely never put on because i would have to redial the suspension set-up which is a PITA. I have great mechanical grip with my set-up and didnt want to screw it up. Any change creates more changes.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 20387741

The GT3 fender liners just have a big hole on the inner edge to feed air towards the associated brake ducts. You can chop your own hole. Or you can cut slats like I did here which mimics the turbo and 4S (and 40AE). Or you can just chop a big hole in the middle of the liner directly behind the radiator in the same area where I made my slats. @De Jeeper did that I believe, and others. I've seen no ill effects. I'd be extremely leery of removing the radiator shrouds altogether though; they are designed to keep the air flowing through the radiators rather than around them, which is a pretty important job.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 20389855

For sure, I would be leery of all mods as it pertains to airflow and cooling. It took me awhile to study the differences between the Carrera and GT3 airflow and parts. But this is what i found. Best way to look at it is to understand the difference between between the 996 GT3 front fender liner and what its designed to do and the 996 Carrera. Both are very different. here is a picture of the 996 GT3 airflow with the GT3 fender liner. Notice the purple line goes into the wheel well around the brakes and out the wheel well. here is the same picture demonstrating the Carrera airflow which uses a different fender liner. Notice the purple arrow is X'ed out and a red arrow points downward. In the Carrera, the fender liner does NOT allow air to flow thru to the wheelwell, instead it flows down under the car right before the front wheel. This is why the Carrera uses the downward pointing radiator shroud. In contrast, the 996 GT3 does not need it. here is a picture of the GT3 fender liner from the wheelwell. Notice the GT3 airduct that is connected to the radiator lines that starts at the large fender cutout on the GT3 fender liner. This is where the air flows thru the radiators, out thru this hole which then flows over the brakes and then out the wheel wells. Some say this reduces front end float and promotes better brake cooling. Dunno, I havent seen any data to confirm. But it does make sense. Here is a picture of a Carrera fender liner. Notice there is no cutout, but in fact the fender liner is sealed where no air can flow. This is why the Carrera has a radiator shroud, which pushes the air downward thrru the floor and exits in front of the wheels. Some say this causes lift at high speeds. It may. Or may not, I havent seen any data to confirm any conclusion. Here is a picture of the Carrera radiator shroud. As you can see, it directs the airflow down and under the car, not backward thru the to the wheel wells. Here is a picture of the underside of the front end of a Carrera. Notice the part circled. This is where the air exits from the radiator shroud. Downward and in front of the wheels. This is a picture of the Carrera radiator shroud which points the air down. Its not needed with the GT3 fender liner since the fender liner does not have an opening for the air to exit underneath. here is a picture of the GT3 fender liner. You can see the rectangular shapped cutout on the inside where the air flows into the wheel well amd over the brakes. Also notice that the rest of the fender liner is solid. What this means is that the opeing that is in a Carrera fender limer where the air flows down from the Radiator shroud in front of the wheels is not there. Instead. Instead, the air flows out thru the wheel well. This is a picture of the Carrera fender liner. Notice the triangular hole that is cut out on the bottom left of the picture. This is where the Radiator shroud pushed the air thru. But as the previous picture shows, there is no radiator shroud hole in the GT3 fender liner, because its not needed. Nor is the radiator shroud. Hope this helps make some sense out of it. Porsche doesnt make it easy to differentiate design/part differences between the 996 GT3 and Carrera.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 20389855

I run the gt3 liners... the shroud he is removing is on the rear of the fan and it directs the air down. I removed them from my fans to use the gt3 liners. I do agree that slots or a big hole with screens and removing the rear shroud (along with blocking the bottom) is the easy way.

Im not sure if the part numbers are still current, but the lip part # is 996-505-986-00 you can try searching that. I installed it on my 01 Aero, and I believe it came with the factory Aero kit, so the lip bolts right onto the stock Aero bumper. It was black originally, and I painted mine silver. Hope that helps!

POST 29Original post

You got my curiosity piqued with these posts. I did a deep dive on 4S/40AE and turbo vs. Carrera a year or so ago, but never looked that hard at the GT3. The Porsche GT3 parts catalog shows radiator shrouds on the exit side of the radiators. They have the same part numbers as a 996.1 Carrera. They don't differentiate between .1 and .2 which seems odd. (I cut a section out of those shrouds when I vented into the wheel wells on my car.) https://assets-v2.porsche.com/us/-/m...996_05_KATALOG Pages 71 & 72 I guess what we need is someone who has a 996.2 GT3 to weigh in. I'd like to see the actual shrouds -- if they exist! The pictures in this thread would say no: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...-upgrades.html

POST 30Original post

Yeah, I have yet to see a rear radiator shroud on any GT3 picture. Nor identify a part number from any diagrams. The beauty of using the GT3 fender liner is that it automatically seals up the downward air flow in the fender liner and only gives it one exit on the inside of the wheel well facilitating better air flow direction, possible better radiator cooling, bettet brake cooling and possibly a reduction in front end lift. I will know in April when i take mine out on the track. But for it to work, the Carrera owner needs to get rid of the rear Carrera radiator shroud or there will be an airflow problem and big cooling problem when using the GT3 fender liners. Just like you, I wrestled with it thinking that there had to be a shroud. But nobody as of yet has been able to show me a picture or give me a part number.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20393154

Really interested to see what you find. How are you going to measure temps? Maybe some temperature strips on the fender liners or something? It'd be cool to just gather all sorts of data on this. I was listening to a podcast with Andreas Preuninger and he mentioned that the difference in first iteration of 996 GT3 versus the second iteration was that they no longer had to use off-the shelf parts, but could go forward with actually having things purpose built. Maybe that's why there's odd information here and there in Porsche tech manuals?

POST 32Original post

The pictures in the parts catalog are fairly generic. If there is no part# next to the item# in the list of parts or the item# doesn't appear in the list of parts then that part isn't used in that application. That fan deflector is shown in the Turbo/GT2 parts catalog and for sure it isn't used on those cars.

POST 33Original post

I’ll have to take some picts of my 99 996 race car’s front inner wheel wells. My fender liners are all hacked up by my race shop quite a few years ago when we were chasing some overheating issues. They raced 996s in GrandAm under GS rules and later the 996 GT3 at Daytona (which they won in Class). I can compare with what’s on my GT3, which has stock fender liners. I’ve not had an issue with brake cooling or excessive lift in the race car. It’ll have to wait a bit though as it’s cold enough in DC that I am not inclined to sit in the driveway removing wheels and such while my fingers turn blue. Ha! -KJ

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 20393177

There may be something to that. Since wr never got the 996.1 GT3 here in the US, i mever really studied it. I have been tracking my 996.2 since 2004 so I am pretty sensitive to its balance and handling at speed with any changes. So I will see if I feel any more or less lift in the front. Regarding temps, I run an digital oil temp gauge as well as the factory water temp gauge. The digital oil temp gauge has been extremely helpful on the track.

POST 35Original post

A lot of the gt3 parts r also cup parts, some r turbo parts and some r c2/4 parts. I have dissasembled both a mk2 gt3 and a mk1 c2. Almost everything is interchangable. There r some unique mods made to the motor and trans internals but outside if that the fuel pump, front wheel liners, suspension and a couple hoses for the trans cooler r about the only things u wont find on other cars. The fan (they only have a drivers side fan) on a gt3 cooling stack bracket does not have the rear deflector. Im 100% sure because i have ine in a tote.

Sooner or later someone with the ability to produce aftermarket 996.1 and 996.2 rubber splitters will appear on the market. Gotta imagine profit margins would be pretty damn good. Not to mention that people will keep buying them to refresh so there is a very attractive recurring revenue stream.

POST 38Original post

Come spring I'm planning to fabricate something along the lines of a splitter. At a local meet, I spotted a 997 with something the owner made out of an aluminium board (forgot the actual name of it) which, in his case, serves mainly as a protective barrier for the lower bumper lip/spoiler. One could make it larger if one wanted to. It was very secure and sturdy and looked pretty minimalist / oem-ish.

POST 39Original post

Alumilite is the most popular stuff to make spliters and baffles for the underside of cars.

POST 40Original post

That could work too but it was not it. He was able to pick it up at local Home Depot / Lowes. Home Depot racing ftw!

POST 41Original post

You can also find carbon fiber boards that alot of guys use for club racing. However, it takes alot to dial them in. Here is what Demonspeed has. Carbon Fiber Sheet - Demon Speed Motorsports https://share.google/LaVbvkWz5gHtrcMf8 GT Racing sells a fiberglass/Kevlar version that's already shaped. 911 Splitter Part# 44C https://share.google/Can67Zl5mpVOJWXvv

POST 42Original post

This is a cool option, @GC996 ! Something I'd probably look into once I have the design and fit dialed in. Wouldn't want to do trial and error with an expensive piece of carbon but once I have the shape and all measurements dialed in, transfering that onto a carbon piece would work great!
