Obviously they then had to take the flywheel off to change the seal etc.

Does anyone have any tests that can be done to see if the clutch needs replacing or is likely to need replacing soon-ish?

If I have the clutch and the RMS changed, is it likely that the oil will have to be changed as well or is it all nicely sealed up in order that these parts can be replaced without the need to drain any oil out?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Anyone had a new clutch fitted recently on their Carrera 996? What did you pay for a OEM clutch? Need some numbers for bartering...
Many thanks :thumb:
RMS is needed apparently. I don't believe a word of it as I've never seen 1 drop of oil. Not going to argue though as my warranty runs out in a month and not renewing. This means I get the clutch replaced for parts only and at 31k miles I think I might aswell. I've seen JZM have Carrera clutch kit at just over £400 but wondering what others have paid....
I got quoted 875 for a clutch and RMS at Glasgow OPC for parts and labour including VAT. Don't know how that breaks down though.
NEW QUESTION...I was only asking the OPC about the clutch cost because I think it's a bit heavy in it's operation - it's really only the RMS that needs done. Does anyone have any tests that can be done to see if the clutch needs replacing or is likely to need replacing soon-ish?
RMS leak is very minor weep - no oil top-up needed in the last year so no hurry to get it done.
I up the bid to 2 new questions
My clutch is fairly heavy but I have no judder or slippage and the bite point is consistent so I assume that its just the way Porsche clutches are???
Also, remind me again what the RMS is?
My clutch is the same, heavy but no judder or slip, but it's done 31k miles, it may last to 60k or it may be 50k... I'm trying to predict and minimise any future outlay.
RMS = Rear Main Seal, aprox £55 worth of parts and 7 hours labour!
I've done just under 50,000 miles on my current clutch (had it fitted as a precaution at just over 60,000 miles when the RMS was done under warranty).
No signs of problems on the current clutch and I believe the last one was original.
However, I do heel and toe every downchange which makes a big difference (82,000 miles out of my 993 clutch).
My friend, whilst I cannot advise on labour (but agree that one of my local indie's have quoted around £1000 INC vat to do clutch and RMS - Charles Ivey, NOT the cheapest, my other one Chelsea Carrera (who I prefer) are no doubt cheaper),
I CAN however tell you that if you want to save on the cost of the Parts buy a SACHS performance clutch, they are the OEM supplier of Porsche 996 clutch's, and a very well respected company in there own righty.
I have had it verified that if you order a 996 clutch from Porsche you will get a SACHS clutch

They are circa £250 on the net... or ebay new.

Thanks Edward,
My concern with this is (and knowing how cr*p Porsche West London are) that if I supply parts they won't give warranty on work or parts. If I use Porsche branded OEM parts then they will warranty their work. For the extra £175 is this piece of mind or not :?
BTW called round 5 OPCs this morning, all quote parts at £426.48 inc VAT.
Autostrasse fitted a clutch kit in my C4S in September 2008 and changed the RMS and intermediate shaft housing whilst the tramsmission was out. Obviously they then had to take the flywheel off to change the seal etc.
The car also had a 60K service, oil & filter; pollen filter etc - total cost inc vat was £1051.
They charged £364 + vat for the clutch kit
Total labour was £390 + vat (service & clutch, RMS and housing change)
RMS area is still damp - but not dripping oil onto the floor or drifting along the sump pan. Maybe its the residue from the previous leak? Myself like many others I'm sure, just live with the damp RMS issue. :mechanic:
Seeing as we're all in the mood for some questions....
If I have the clutch and the RMS changed, is it likely that the oil will have to be changed as well or is it all nicely sealed up in order that these parts can be replaced without the need to drain any oil out?
One would hope that you wouldn't need an oil change for this... If you do, something's gone badly wrong and your clutch will have become a very inefficient torque-convertor!
Sorry - couldn't resist that!
No oil change required.
