Can someone guide me step by step on how to run the backup camera wire from the license plate to the back of my aftermarket stereo?
I don't want to make holes in my car and also I don't want to break a lot of things apart. Obviously I don't want the cable showing anywhere on the interior of the car or on the trunk, but also, I don't need to hide the wire in the depths of the car LOL! If I can lightly hide the cable somewhere but make the installation easy, it's enough for me.
I got a 2012
Porsche Boxster
Base
I got a Sony XAV-AX1000 player
And a $35 backup camera I got on
amazon
.
Also, I need to know which wire to connect it to for power (what color is the backup light wire?)
I want to use the hole there is behind the license plate and go from there. Wouldn't want to remove the rear bumper.
BONUS: if you can tell me how to connect my player to the parking break wire, I would appreciate that too!
Thank you!
Going for the easy one first - the parking brake wires. Buy a parking brake jumper/emulator... It's a simple 3 wire resistor/capacitor (electronic gizmo) that fools the head unit into thinking the parking brake is on. I went with the theory there is less risk in lying to my aftermarket head unit than there was in tapping into the cars wiring harness...
I ran my backup camera in a 2006 - yours may be a little different... I took out the passenger tail light (1 plastic cover and 3 small nuts), this allowed me to see the hole under the license plate. Snake the camera lead from the plate to the tail light opening. Tie it off to the framework. Snake it though the seams in the carpet. Take out both the upper and front engine covers (carpet and pad), snake the cable through. I went up the center console. With the
Bose
subwoofer taken out it gave me a nice clean shot to the head unit cavity.
I triggered mine off the back up bulb. It's 2 wires - grab a multimeter and find which is positive, which is negative. You can either use Scotch Locks to tap into the wires (I hate these things), clip, strip, and tap into the wires with either crimp connectors or solder. I opened up the connector and tapped in after the weather sealing...
Good luck.
