Hi folks, After replacing my starter motor and replacing all the O rings on the fuel injectors I went for a test ride. Everything was great until I shut down in the garage. The key wouldn't come out of the ign switch. No problem, I'll tackle it in the morning. You know how this is going, that's right, I didn't get back to fixing the problem for a week. And now I had no battery, dead, kaput. I had forgotten that when you leave the key in the switch a whole bunch of stuff is energized and the bat goes flat.
So, I just did what your supposed to do, pull out the contact in the fuse box, jump from good bat and bingo! nothing. double checked my connections but NG. Checked online and hey, there is a neat release cable in front of the left front wheel. Now we are good to go, yeah right! 3 men and a boy couldn't pull hard enough to pop the frunk. Now what?
I got out the wiring diagram and studied a bit. Well looky here there is a fuse for the rear lid release, A3. Must be one for the front. An hour later I still had not found it. I figured at this point I might as well try A3, maybe the front and rear decks releases are on the same circuit. I pulled A3, made up a spade terminal with a 3 inch pig tail and pushed the spade into the top connector for the fuse ( the fuse sits vertically) hooked up my good bat and nothing. Hmm? Tried the lower terminal, lights came on I heard distant singing, the 1812 overture complete with cannons and when I pulled the frunk release on the door sill up popped the frunk.
I have since reworked the lock mechanism with a hidden manual push button release so this can never happen again. I also found that my ign switch was shot so I got one from Rock Auto for $149. E-Euro Parts had it for $179. Even the plastic housing has the same casting number on it.
I hope this helps somebody else with this problem. Porsche outwitted themselves with the lid release "improvement". A stranded cable in a flexible housing is so much more reliable.
Sounds like a dead battery.
I keep my car on a battery tender over the winter through the cigarette lighter in the center console (it's live all the time) - would putting power off a battery (not a tender because of the low amperage) be enough to pop the frunk?
Yes. I've used one of those booster boxes to get access to the frunk when my battery died.
No sh-t sherlock! Did you even read my post? The point was there is another way to open the frunk: fuse A3
For your '07 Cayman S, it sounds like you've found and tried using the Emergency Power contact in the fuse box, if I understand your note. I think you've asked whether there is a fuse in that circuit, and the answer is no: the power output from the contact feeds the relay next to it, which in turn sends power directly to the Front End control unit. The FE CU powers the hood release and much of all the other electronics in your frunk. Fuse A3 powers the rear CU, not the front which is powered by fuse C3 if I am reading the diagrams correctly.
Fuse A3 does indeed permit you to open the front trunk. On my car 2007CS the front and rear are on the same power source but they do have separate relays. Energizing the lower fuse connector with 12 vdc gets the job done. I use a 12vdc motorcycle battery with 16ga wire jumpers.
