Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2000 registered 3.4 C2 is showing some unexpect rear tyre wear, nearside is down to 2mm but offside still has almost 5mm left on it. As both tyres are the same age I can only assume either my alignment is way out or it's my driving. I'd assumed that all 911's had an LSD when I bought it but a lack of grip (cough) coming out of the hairpins on my commute has made me wonder. It might explain the odd wear too as all the really fun turns are left handers. Anyone know if slip diffs were standard fit? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Hi Stuart, great name you've got there LSD was an optional extra an actually very rare. I've only seen 2 examples of a standard Carrera with optional LSD. Check your option sticker under the bonnet to see if it's listed on your car. This is what you're looking for: M224 = AUTOMATIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL You may want to get a Geometry alignment done which might highlight why you're getting this wear. :thumb:

POST 3Original post

Or M220 - Locking Differential 40% I THINK that M224 is the "Auto Limited Slip Diff" on the Tiptronic. +1 on the alignment, deffo

POST 4Original post

224 is the active braked differential... Not an LSD at all really, but part of the ABS system that pulses the brakes on a spinning wheel.

POST 5Original post

Diff related option codes: 219 Differential 220 Locking differential (40%) 221 Porsche-locking differential 224 ABD (Active Brake Differential) I understand that ABD(224) is integrated into the Porsche Stability Mgmt System

POST 6Original post

M224 pre-dates PSM as I had it on my 98 C2 with TC. God, what anoraks we are.....

POST 7Original post

yes agreed but I do believe that old opt code 224 in the 996 is still integrated/deployed within the 997's PASM system and forms the main aspect of it! ......just off to Blacks to buy a new anorak

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the replies, my car doesn't have any of those codes. 2 new Pilot Sports on order as a quick tread depth test showed the nearside tyre to be only just legal - it's gotta go. Now I just need to get to the bottom of how I've ended up with an evenly worn tyre so much more heavly worn than the other side of the axle :dont know:

POST 9Original post

probably a geo issue. If it's really bad you should be able to notice any difference in the cambers by standing approx 20 feet back and looking at how each rear wheel is sitting. Negative camber wears tyres in the inside so look to see if your camber on the effected wheel is "tucked in" more inwards at the top of the tyre as you look from behind. It's a rough check and if you see an abnormality between both wheels get it checked-out before fitting your new tyre. I kerbed a wheel at 10mph once and it knocked the geo out quite a bit.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Probably is geo and it is the wheel my wife kerbed, albeit at 1 - 2mph. What are the odds of my local tyre place being able to do a good job on the weird setup on these things? Wear is also unusual as both tyres are worn perfectly evenly across the tread but one wheel has worn down much more than the other - 1.6mm plays 4mm remaining.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
