I recently installed an Everstart H8 AGM battery, that I bought from Walmart for $189 with free delivery, in my car.

I used a H6 in western Mass for many years, no problem starting a v6 Lexus in -10 weather.

Suggestion
If you want to install an H7 (which is what I replaced), there is a threaded hole for that, so you won't have to do any modifications.

You can run the convertible top up and down for about 2 hours before you will be unable to start the car.

Suggestion
Good warranty and plenty of Walmarts out there in case you run into a problem on a road trip .

Suggestion
You can also use an H8 if you feel you really need the capacity, but you'll need the appropriate nut for the hold down bolt as the tray isn't threaded at that spot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The guy at Costco said that the 996 doesn't have the AGM H7 listed as compatible batteries, but it worked fine for me and others on the forum.
I have a 2003 C2 in need of a battery. Any suggestions for that replacement part? Seems pretty straight forward part, however I want the right one which will last for awhile and not break the bank.
The Interstate AGM battery I bought for my 996 doesn't need vented, but I think it still has a little place for you to plug in your vent hose.
Go for the AGM H7. The guy at Costco said that the 996 doesn't have the AGM H7 listed as compatible batteries, but it worked fine for me and others on the forum.
Walmart has H7 and H8 AGM batteries for 160 to 190 bucks . Good warranty and plenty of Walmarts out there in case you run into a problem on a road trip . Let's face it there are 3 - 4 battery manufacturers out there , it's not like Walmart are making them .
Exactly correct....
My Wally AGM H6 has a made in Germany sticker. Not that that probably even matters.
Just saying these are great batteries with the best no questions/no testing, full replacement 4 year warranty. Not sure anyone beats that warranty anywhere. Yes some do match it, some need testing to prove its bad. And the low price is hard to beat anywhere. For the life of me, can't find any downsides of this Walmart purchase.
If ya wana be a dick, bring it back to Walmart in 3.5 years and get a new 1 free. Seen that done before....
Down here in Florida a H6 is more than sufficient and fits/clamps down right in perfectly. Spins over both my 996 fast. H6 capacities are probably more than sufficient anywhere in USA for our sports cars. A plus being its a bit lighter(H6-45lbs vs H7-52lbs)/ also little smaller than H7/H8. I used a H6 in western Mass for many years, no problem starting a v6 Lexus in -10 weather.
Another recommendation for the H7 AGM, we have them in our 996 and Boxster S. H6 is typically fine, but the extra capacity gives a bit more of a buffer in cars that sit. I've had good luck with O'Reillys, typically replacing them at 7-8 years out of caution.
You can also use an H8 if you feel you really need the capacity, but you'll need the appropriate nut for the hold down bolt as the tray isn't threaded at that spot.
My 6 year old Interstate Battery was starting to corrode beneath the negative post. I replaced it to day with an H7 AGM from Walmart ($189). I kept my CTEK plugged into the cigarette lighter to not lose any settings.
The guy I bought my 996 from was in dementia and had the car towed (by the guy who the Porsche dealer uses). They charged him $460 for a new battery and that did not include installation, which was extra. Sigh.
Costco!
During my alignment of my 2000 C2, the dealership did a vehicle review and noticed my battery wasn't the correct size. I was quoted $900 for a new battery, installation and the correct mounting bracket. Needless to say I'm still using the incorrect battery...
I am admittedly ignorant when it comes to the differences among these h6, h7, & h8 batteries
I have a cabriolet, not really concerned w weight.
With the top going up and down would you use a larger battery to power the top without the engine running?
there are plenty of times when im doing that and always wondering if I am killing the battery.
thanks!
Well, there are Electrical Engineers on here that could figure it out exactly.
But my ruff estimate is somewhere between 50-100 up down cab top cycles would easily be possible on a fully charged H6(depending on ambient temps) before wearing battery down enough that car won't start. Maybe 10% more cycles with a H7, and another few more % with the H8. Its a relatively small hydraulic motor that runs the top and only for 5-10 seconds. How many times do we need to cycle the top with engine off..?
Question is, when is enough battery enough, how much overkill do we need or will we ever need...? If there is a problem with alternator charging systems, car will eventually die with any battery....
The H6 is more than adequate for the car in most circumstances. I went to the larger batteries on all of our P'cars because the cars sit (I have too many...1st world problem) and the larger batteries provide a bit more margin at the penalty of ~9 lbs additional weight; ~1.3 gallons of fuel.
Yeah, I have done Interstate H7s for nearly 15 years. Have replaced them on average every 5 years. I keep them trickle charged in the winter so I have not had a faikure, but I like to keep them relatively fresh. Not very expensive batteries, but they work.
Electrical engineer here with your answer. You can run the convertible top up and down for about 2 hours before you will be unable to start the car. I was not able to find the exact wattage of the convertible top motor, but it is on a 30 amp fuse the same as the power seats or the power windows. That means they all use less, than 30 amps but it gives you an idea on a relative basis.
The standard battery in our cars has about 75 Amp hours, so if the convertible top motor actually drew 30 amps, the battery would last 2.5 hours (75/30).
Cheers.
I recently installed an Everstart H8 AGM battery, that I bought from Walmart for $189 with free delivery, in my car. You can install an H7 or H8 but to install an H8, I had to have a nut welded to the underside of my battery tray as there is a hole for an H8 hold-down but it's not threaded. If you want to install an H7 (which is what I replaced), there is a threaded hole for that, so you won't have to do any modifications. BTW, my H7 battery was a Duralast AGM from Autozone, which has been in use for over 13 years, but my car has always been on a battery maintainer.
Some battery trivia....
Johnson Controls, now bought by Clarios, make quite a few of the batteries up for discussion here. World's largest automotive battery manufacturer
Many are exactly the same except for color of the case... Some like Optima are a custom build
