Suggestion

However for Vlad's benefit, I did in my reply miss an obvious prior check - ie to check the level in the hydraulic fluid reservoir.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, annoyingly my car C4s had developed a squealing when I manoeuvre at parking speeds on full or near to full steering lock. It sounds like a belt slipping. I am guessing its something to do with powersteering - and the belt that drives the power steering pump? Anyone had this - could explain what is going wrong failing - just want to be forarmed when I talk to the OPC - I am still warrantied. Is it a common/costly to repair problem car is 7 years old 47K miles - I never dry steer.

POST 2Original post

When you are at or almost on full lock, the system cannot deliver any more hydraulic fluid to the pressure side of the steering ram, so the presure relief valve dumps oil back to the reservoir, this often is the cause of the noise. Alternatively have you noticed any tendency for the steering to appear to slightly kick against the direction of turn when making a corner on a bumpy road? If you had this may indicate a bit of wear in the steering valve chest allowing pressured fluid to fluctuate from side to side of the steering ram. This will also increase the risk of noise on full lock in some circumstances. Best Regards Big Bob

Big Bob is their nothing you don't know about the mechanics of cars? I seem to learn something new everytime I read a post, thank you. :worship: Simon

POST 4Original post

Hi Memory Loss. One of the advantages of being an old git of 63 ld: , having started rebuilding motor bikes at 16, and then at 17 progressing to rebuilding cars, is that you come across a lot of situations, and you find out the reasons for them, and it kind of stays in the brainbox, so when someone asks about a symptom you can relate it to things you have seen and experienced, and the likely fixes. My old dad died on January 14th 2009 at 90, he had Alzheimers but talk to him say about Automatic Transmissions he could still talk you through the rebuild of say a Borgwarner 35 Box, although he coul;d not remember who is the Prime minister! (Mind you I keep wondering :?: if we actually have a Prime Minister in the UK at present  - but thats another thread :hand: !) However for Vlad's benefit, I did in my reply miss an obvious prior check - ie to check the level in the hydraulic fluid reservoir. Because if the level is low you can start pumping air/fluid which also can cause some funny noises! Regards Big Bob

POST 5Original post

Big Bob's right as usual! If you put most cars at full lock you'll hear the high pitched squeal - nothing to worry about in itself, it's normal. Ray :thumb:

POST 6Original post

Big Bob is right as usual Funny thing is , my car did that as well ( loud pitch noise when on parking steering lockl ) and now during a recent service they found the wheel bearings completly smashed and had to be replaced. They asked me "did you heard them??" I thought it was normal that noise. Doesnt do now on parking full lock though...

POST 7Original post

Yep I'm with Big Bob too A PAS fluid wouldn't go a miss. IMO
