Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

My 996 was doing the same,if you pop the rubber grommet plugs out the bottom of the doors and use an allen key,you can adjust the angle of the window, adjust the top closer to the seal (push the 2 allen bolts out towards the bottom lip of the door) and the noise will be better

Having driven both cars I found the steering in the M3 a bit vague compared with the 996 C2 but that was on a very short test drive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone else experience some whistling wind noise at about 75mph and above. It doesnt sound like wind rushing around the car or wing mirrors, its more like wind is getting through a seal or something. Its not very loud and only noticable on smooth road surfaces when there isnt much tyre noise. I guess only us classic C2 owners will notice it as C4 owners would have it drowned out because of all the mechanical noise from the 4 wheel drive system in the front of the car. Mark (pedantic) Davies MY02 996 C2

POST 2Original post

Mark, I never go above the speed limit [ ][ ][ ][ ] So I cannot comment [ ] Kind Regards Andrew

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Andrew, Of course I should have pointed out that this only occurs in motorways in europe! Regards Mark

POST 4Original post

I' ve discovered that I also get wind noise around the passenger window area when the sunroof is open and I' m pressing on!! I guess the solution is to not open the sunroof!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Steve, Yes I suspect that its coming from the passenger window seal as well. I can see how a sunroof might increase the tendancy for air to get sucked into the cabin through a seal rather than round the body, unfortunatley I dont have a sunroof fitted so I guess I just have a dodgy seal. Regards Mark

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Andrew, I' d be really interested in your views on BMW and the M3. At one point in 2001 I had both the M3 and the 996 on order, however BMW lied to me about delivery dates and my position on the order list, so I ending up cancelling. Having driven both cars I found the steering in the M3 a bit vague compared with the 996 C2 but that was on a very short test drive. I thought the 996 was more focused from a driving point of view, however the M3 was superb value for money. I would be interested in knowing your unbiased views of these two cars. Regards Mark

POST 7Original post

Are the tops of the window touching the seals all the way along, and is the window going up inside the lip at the top? When you are driving, try gently pushing the top rear corner of the window outwards. If the wind noise increases, then the window might need adjusting. Another cause of wind noise on early cars is the windscreen seal, which comes loose. Check to see that it is tight, especially along the top edge, as the wind can get underneath and cause a noise.

POST 8Original post

Thanks Richard The windows are going into the seals i checked this but will also check the windscreen, its not that bad, but i just noticed it more than normal. Phil

POST 10Original post

I have had a good look and it looks like all the seals are ok, thanks to p5hrr for the great tip, when i get the next chance to have a look i will, how much would an OPC charge for making this adjustment. Phil

POST 11Original post

Another question are these the four large rubber covers two on each end of the bottom of the door, i guess two for the front and the other two for the back of the window? havent yet taken them off but had a look and thought i would ask the question. Phil

POST 12Original post

This is a view from inside the door. One cover is for the height adjustment screw, and the other cover is for the in-out adjustment, which is achieved by moving the bottom mount, as Peter says. There are two at the front and two at the back of the door.

POST 13Original post

Perfect, i will give it ago when i get some time, the picture is very helpful. Thanks Phil
