Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I didn't get any codes, except P1602, which I'll chalk up to it being disconnected from the battery for a while.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect from the battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on the intake jic' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

A few hundred bucks in tools, parts and a few weeks of labor later, I have now replaced the cam position sensor.

The solenoid and actuators r bank specific and can not be swapped on a mk1.

I would inspect the plemum boots on both sides with a mirror or endoscope and make sure they r sealed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. So in
this thread
, I described some misfires I was getting on my '99 996.1. A few hundred bucks in tools, parts and a few weeks of labor later, I have now replaced the cam position sensor.
@yelcab
described the order as cam position sensor, then solenoid and actuator.
Today I tried to start it after replacing the sensor. It fired up, sounded like it did before (like it was badly misfiring), ran for maybe 1 minute, then died. I didn't get any codes, except P1602, which I'll chalk up to it being disconnected from the battery for a while. I don't think it went through enough cycles to generate misfire codes. And it won't even start now. So I'm at a decision point. I can move on to the solenoid / actuator, which I now realize is about $1000 in parts. Or I can have it towed to my indy. If my indy is likely to do this same work, then I'll do it myself. But I keep reading that the solenoid rarely goes out, so I'm wondering whether the trained mechanics would do a better job at diagnosing.
If I could post a poll, I would - what would you do?
I am not an expert, but if you plan on working on it, first thing I would do is go
here
and setup PIWIS on laptop. Report back with current codes.
If the variocam actuator on either bank gets stuck in the tensioned position, it will cause it to run poorly.
There is a test in PIWIS to actuate the variocams. Car needs to be running though and oil up to temp, so that may be an issue. You can do it with a 9v battery connected to the wire going into the variocam solenoid.
If the actuator fails, you should get P1530 or P1531. Camshaft Sensor Bank 2 will throw P1397 if its dead, so not sure which one you changed. You can go
here
for all the codes.
I may be doing the actuator on my 99 C2 soon if my codes come back. You need to buy a special toolkit to hold the cams and align them. There is a specific procedure to follow for the timing so if you are unsure about this, let the Indy handle it.
The mechanic would ...
1. Swap solenoids left to right to see if it follows the solenoid.
2. If yes, he replaces the offending unit. A solenoid is about $500.
3. If it stays in the same place, then replaces the actuator. This part is about $1,400.
The labor for the replacement of actuator is very likely ~$2,000, and it takes some experience to do.
The solenoid and actuators r bank specific and can not be swapped on a mk1.
I would inspect the plemum boots on both sides with a mirror or endoscope and make sure they r sealed. Its very common to get a large air leak and cause the motor to die off after starting. Go over all yoir work lne more time and make sure its all correct.
Edit: reread and noticed u might not have removed the plenums. I would still do a smoke check on the intake jic.
