Hello all, I just got my 2007 Cayman (as in last night). I've searched a bit here and there are lots of threads about bluetooth issues, the fact that the fiber optic nature of the Porsche system is a problem, "Parrot", "GW", Denison and various other things I'm not sure I quite understand yet.
My car has PCM 2.1 and Bose, but no phone module. I need Bluetooth. Can someone tell me what my basic options are and where to go to get more info?
Four basic pieces of info about me that may help narrow things down: (1) I use a Blackberry Pearl, (2) I detest those incredibly dorky little headsets (apologies to anyone who wears them, not trying to be a jerk here), (3) I'm extremely opposed to poking new holes anywhere in my console or display, even if I can't see them easily, unless I really have no other choice and (4) regrettably, I don't really know nearly enough to be able to do any of my own wiring/install.
Oh, and I'm in the Philadelphia area, in case that is relevant (i.e. great installer around here or something).
Any advice would be much appreciated. (And yes, I will register my Cayman and put pictures up as soon as I get a chance
Thanks very much.
Welcome. I can only tell you what I did and that was to add a Motorola IHF1000. They are readily available kits. Installation is not an issue. For example, you can use a company like this
Car-kit.com | The Ultimate hands free cell phone accessory
. They sell you the kit and work with an local installer who will come and install it in your driveway. However, their prices can be high ($250) plus install. Your better off just googling prices on the kit and buying it online somewhere. Amazon is selling it for $170. Finding a local installer should not be hard. Ask your local porsche dealer who does their bluetooth or installs or a local high end audio store dealer can probably do it. I forget who I used but it might have been
The Wireless Doctor, Hands Free Car Kits, GPS, XM & Sirius, Installations & Repair - Home
. They say SE PA. You can always call them and ask and they can probably just sell whatever kit you want themselves or recommend something. Whoever it was, they just came and did it in the driveway.
It works fine. It does not use the car speakers but I did that for a reason. The human voice uses a certain frequency range and the speaker that comes with the kit is designed for those frequencies. I've used this in others cars too and it works fine.
Using this kit its all voice activated as well. You do have to touch the button once but after that you can just say "dial ... whatever" (e.g., speed dial a # or say the actual phone number). It syncs with up to 4 phones. To hang up, you click on a button.
From the pic below, the little control module is hidden by the steering wheel, you really can't see it. No holes are drilled (except for the speaker). The speaker is hidden in the passenger footwell. You can't see it.
Chows, I never thanked you for your informative post, especially the picture! I was going to ask if someone could post a pic.
So thanks.
