6 speaker or 10 speaker?

1) How do I tell if I have a 10 speaker system or a 6 speaker one? 2) Am I stupid?

count them! If you mean the "sound pack" - this is an extra speaker in each door instead of door bins. If you have "Bose" signed speakers you should have 10 speakers aswell. I will check for option codes.

Aha! I have door bins so I must have 6 speakers? I have ordered a new stereo and the guy says if I have a 6 speaker system I will not need a patch lead but if I have the 10 I will need an adaptor from the car harness to ISO. No Bose badges either, how should I feel about that? :?:

Umm, are you sure you don't have just 4 speakers? No door speakers means you have 2 dash mounted and 2 behind the seats, no bass unit... And they'll be 'Nokia' brand which is midrange unit only, no seperate tweeter within each unit. I don't know how you can have 10 speakers in a 996 anyway, that's not Bose sound pack spec IIRC. Surely it would be 7. 2 front, 2 door, 2 rear and 1 bass, I may be completely wrong though :thumb:

Six speaker seems about right, I have a pair (1 each side) of what looks like two speakers 'siamesed' into one grille on the top of the dash (possibly just 1 speaker under a fancy grille?), the same in the rear quarters and two smaller (tweeters?) on the front of the dash under the air vents. They all look like original factory items and I have no door speakers.

The option codes are 490 (sound pack) or 680 (Bose) Check option code sticker under front boot lid or in front of service book. There are speakers on top of dash x4 and x2 below l/r air vents (tweeters), x2 in doors and x2 in rear

Forgot about the one's under the air vents, are there 4 on the dash though? I had full Bose on my C4 and only remember the 2 units, each having a mid and tweeter in them but that's still only 2 units :?

There are no speakers in or below the side air vents. What looks like a speaker grill on the left hand vent is the interior air temperature sensor fan.

So how do they make 10? I'm confused :?

I only have a blurry cameraphone picture to go on, but my sticker looks like it has 490 and 680 on it - is that possible? It could be G80 maybe. It's a pre-facelift 996. I have 2 double grills at the front near the windscreen, 2 in the doors, 2 grills by air vents (could be tweeters) and some more at the rear somewhere. The grills don't have bose written on them as far as I remember, but I do have a little seperate control module that does the sound balance and some surround-like stuff. I also have what looks like an amp in the front boot. I've been planning on replacing the audio system at some point, but the complexity of the current system, among other things, has put me off.

Well, strictly speaking, for Bose (680) it's 11: 2 x speakers in the dash with 2 x tweeters in the same housings 2 x door speakers 2 x speakers in the rear panels with 2 x tweeters in the same housings 1 x sub-woofer behind the rear seats (coupe) or passenger footwell (cab and targa) Total: 11 The Harman (490) system didn't have a sub-woofer, so I suppose you could call that a 10-speaker system. It's marketing hype, and most people refer to the sound packages (Bose or Harman) as 6-speaker systems. The basic speaker setup is just two dash and two rear speakers (neither of which are fitted with tweeters) so they are 4-speaker setups.

That's cheating, a speaker unit should be classed as one speaker! I work in film post production in massive colour grading suits with full theatrical audio set ups, we don't call it 15.3 surround... Technically I've got 8 then as I've replaced the Nokia units with Bose! Marketing nonsense :hand:

Yep. I ripped out my 10 speaker system and replaced it with 6 proper co-axial speakers. Ooops, maybe that means I have a 12-speaker system..... :dont know: :dont know:

the sub in the rear has 2 speakers in it, so a Bose system has 12 "speakers", 4 of which are tweeters (alongside dash top & rear panel speakers) hope that's cleared it all up for you.......... :lol:
