Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Of course check the condition of bearings to the extent possible.
Leading evidence: 'Check condition of bearings' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check condition of bearings' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Did you check the prices on LSD, its installation cost, G50-996 syncros and sliders, and gear sets?

I'd also inspect 5th and 6th gear synchros, replace as needed.

When I rebuild these transmissions (G96 for the 911, G86.20 for the first generation Boxster six-speed), replacing the 3rd-to-6th thrust washer with CMS' improved part is mandatory.

Replacing all of the syncros is a lot but could I just do 2-4 or some subset?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My c4's transmission is currently taken apart for some rebuild warranty work and i'm considering some upgrades / preventative maintenance while its out.
3 things i'm considering:
wavetrac diff - does this require rwd conversion
upgraded syncros - do I have to / should I replace all of them? or are there just a few important ones?
4:1 rack and pinion
I'm not made of money but the 4:1 is really tempting. Replacing all of the syncros is a lot but could I just do 2-4 or some subset? Thoughts?
"[you] are not made of money" ...
could have fooled me. Did you check the prices on LSD, its installation cost, G50-996 syncros and sliders, and gear sets? You have got to be kidding me.
The lower gear synchros are certainly the ones that see the most wear and are normally replaced. You may also want / need to replace their engagement teeth (dog rings) and shift sleeves, depending on condition. I'd include 1st gear. I'd also inspect 5th and 6th gear synchros, replace as needed. Of course check the condition of bearings to the extent possible.
When I rebuild these transmissions (G96 for the 911, G86.20 for the first generation Boxster six-speed), replacing the 3rd-to-6th thrust washer with CMS' improved part is mandatory. The factory washer breaks, and when that happens things get really expensive quickly. You may also want to replace the shift arrester segment with CMS' improved version.
I am a little surprised that you are coming to this forum for advice, when it sounds like you already have someone working on your transmission. They really ought to be your best source of good advice. Good luck with the project!
Well the entire transmissions already apart and that's covered under their warranty, so I wouldn't be paying much in labor costs, and that does make it significantly cheaper than it otherwise would be.
The diff's spider gear, case bearings and I believe the pinion bearing are being replaced at no cost too
