Its almost embarrasing trying to start the car up in front of people without putting my foot on the gas to cover up the noise of it trying to get up and running of its own volition.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have this REALLY annoying thing happening when starting up my car from cold either in the morning, or in the evening when leaving from work. Basically the car starts, but it sounds like its almost struggling to 'pick up' to revving properly. If i put my foot on the gas and keep it held there while i start the car up, it starts straight up and obviously makes a massive growl since i have a PSE installed. If the car is warm from being driven, theres no problem and it sounds like a formerly 70 grand car should sound. Very annoying since my Maserati 4200 sounds like god shouting when it starts up no matter how cold it is, and my old E46 BMW which was my former daily driver would sound like a sports coupe regardless of the cold as well. Its almost embarrasing trying to start the car up in front of people without putting my foot on the gas to cover up the noise of it trying to get up and running of its own volition. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

sounds like your car is not firing on all cylinders when cold - : spark plugs or spark plug coils could be the problem Ray :thumb

POST 3Original post

When did you have last have the coil packs changed? They crack and fatique over time and let moisture in then the spark deteriorates.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahhh interesting! I had the 48k service a few weeks back and they said the spark plugs needed doing which i passed on, since the service bill was knocking on for 900 pounds and i wasnt feeling particularly flush by that point. Looks like i need to bite the bullet and get these done now. Curiously i've had the car in before Christmas about this VERY problem and the OPC failed to even suggest that could be the problem, and said the car was absolutely fine and started first time. Very frustrating!

POST 5Original post

If you are going to get new plugs can I suggest that you change the coil packs at the same time as there will be no additional labour charge then. Coil packs are about £25 each I think: I had all mine changed by ProMax Motorsport (site sponsor / advertiser I notice) and IIRC the total bill came to about £200. (I didn't change plugs at that time though, so the cost of the plugs only would need to be added to that).

POST 6Original post

Could well be coil packs- mine needed changing at 36k. New plugs and coils could well help. The coils sit at the bottom of the engine and get shot blasted with wet and salt, and inevitably deteriorate... FWIW its well worth finding a respected local indy specialist rather than an OPC- not only will you reduce your bills, but most indys genuinely want to do a better job.
