if a fixed spoiler replaces the original spoiler which raises up at speed....will I get any cooling problems?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

you may have gathered from a couple of other threads that I am considering getting a fixed rear spoiler such as those advertised attached. http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt715...poilers---Aero-Kits/Rear-Spoilers---Aerofoil/ I have a couple of naive questions :- 1. if a fixed spoiler replaces the original spoiler which raises up at speed....will I get any cooling problems? 2. there are slats in the baseplate for a fixed spoiler to let air into the engine bay......will this cause water to enter the engine bay and cause problems. cheers

POST 2Original post

ohhhh no.......... rearrange this! kettle .. worms .. can .. open ... lol . lol  Ohhh and aero :frustrated: dynamics tooooo..... :what: :?:

POST 3Original post

just checked out the link. HOW MUCH£££££. ive seen these items cost less from porsche

POST 4Original post

1. if a fixed spoiler replaces the original spoiler which raises up at speed....will I get any cooling problems? No, OEM retractable spoiler is primarily for aerodynamics not cooling, it does allow warm air to escape but a fixed spoiler will come with cooling holes also. 2. there are slats in the baseplate for a fixed spoiler to let air into the engine bay......will this cause water to enter the engine bay and cause problems. No, not any more so than the OEM spoiler, the actual cross sectional area of slat 'holes' and larger fixed spoiler holes are aprox the same, it's never been a problem for GT cars who have the same openings RE aerodynamics, it's kind fo like sex, make sure you pay attention to the front before you start fiddling with the rear. :thumb:

POST 5Original post

+1 The front end is quite light at 70-80mph. If you are going to fit a rear wing I would say you need the aero front bumper to match.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

mmm ... this thread is going in an interesting direction and almost putting me off putting a spoiler on the back (for aesthetics not downforce) :? ...... how many of you guys who have rear spoilers have modified your front end to give you more grip either by splitters/front spoiler?

POST 7Original post

Me, I put the GT3 cup splitter on, the overall aerodynamics aren't as aggresive as a GT3 MKII bumper with splitter but it really does help. It needed some slight modification (ie re-shaping the ends) to fit the OEM front PU but works well. :thumb:

POST 8Original post

So doesn't fitting a new rear spoiler just "replace" the aerodynamic effect of the Porsche "pop up" one??? Downforce wise I seem to recal a clever chappy putting a post on here about downforces and speeds, etc, etc??

POST 9Original post

Different spoilers have different downforce pressures, ie a RS or Cup wing has alot more downforce than a 'pop up' spoiler...

POST 10Original post

On a GT3 or GT2 the rear spoiler is very definitely to provide additional downforce at higher speeds and with that additional downforce being behind the rear wheels it has the effect of lifting the front end due to the lever action on the chassis around the rear axle. So you MUST increase front downforce to match the increase in front lift that results. I could get all complicated here and start talking about aerodynamic torque depending upon the length of the wheelbase and such... but the good news is that a fraction of the extra rear downforce is all that's required at the front. Unless you are fitting some mahoosive great wing on the back (come in Jiff - your time is up_) a GT3 front spoiler will be more than adequate, as it is designed to cater for the GT3 rear spoiler with shims attached for additional downforce... HTH You could always go for something like this though if you're worried about front end lift... :thumb:

POST 11Original post

I'd settle for the penthouse model!!! well one can dream??? Ok.... hmmmm So would this create a major difference to the "pop up" spoiler? The dimensions are pritty similar!

POST 12Original post

I think that will produce a little more downforce than the standard spoiler, but you would probably only notice any difference in steering feel at very high speeds, if at all. Apologies for not being familiar with that one, but I suspect it is cosmetic as much as anything as I bet the spoiler ends create massive turbulence with that downwards curve... Probably costing 5% in fuel consumption at high speed

POST 13Original post

Hmmmmm ok true confession time! I really think the 996 lacks that certain something visually! Hence the rear spoiler! An impulse purchase off ebay!! Blimy 5% more fuel consumption eeek!

POST 14Original post

We're talking 3-figure speeds here... Doubt if you'd notice at normal speeds :thumb:

POST 15Original post

Wattie, what is with the new picture?? - apart from being pic of the TAG/Porsche/McLaren?? LOJO
