Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

When i took mine apart i figured out there is just illumination behind the display that works as the hvac settings are changed with your buttons.

With respect to the HVAC and instrument cluster digital displays, I have always wondered a few things around pro-actively stocking these items for future use, should the displays become defective.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

this is a little different though no? The hvac display just pops out and you insert the new glass. This requires really fine soldering work to affix the new display to the board right?
Yeah I hear that. Palo Alto Speedometers may be able to give you a quote. They aren't cheap but I have sent old clisters to them and they do fine work.

1. Are the displays just generic and when they are plugged into the car the display is updated - for example, is "MANUELL" on the hvac part of the display or generated when the display is connected to the car (I am assuming it has to be the former).
2. For the HVAC, I see a variety of different vendors. Are these just coming straight from China and it is worth buying from the generic chinese sources, or is there a quality difference around the different vendors?
The HVAC is a screen and was very easy to replace, did it in maybe a half hour. My ODO went dark but the back lighting was a small individual bulb, not a little screen like depicted / like the HVAC. Not sure if there's a difference from a 996.1 to 996.2?
For number 1, answer is the former. When i took mine apart i figured out there is just illumination behind the display that works as the hvac settings are changed with your buttons. Super easy replacement. My screen was peeling. This one went in beautifullly and looks great. Only difference is this one eads "man" instead of "manuell"
