Leading evidence: 'Use with either sound system' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace keyboard' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought a PCM off of ebay that came out of an 06 boxster that had navigation, cd changer, and bose. After installing it in my car, I got the expected errors and no sound. No Navigation, no amp, no cd changer. I knew from doing the research on this site that I would get these errors and I needed the dealership to reprogram it. No problem I figured. After paying for 2 hours of service at my dealership, they still can't get the sound to work.
The mechanic pulled out the PCM and said that this was the wrong one for my car. I needed one for a non bose car and this PCM unit was for a bose car. I thought from reading here that they would be able to reprogram it to work for a car with or without bose. Is the porsche mechanic wrong?
I guess I'm going to have to sell this unit to someone with a bose car. Anyone with a bose car looking for a PCM?
There are differences in PCM head units that's why there are different part/serial numbers. If it was from a Bose car it would be sending the amp signal out via fiber optic to the bose amp, if it was a non-bose car it would be sending the signal via copper wire to the non-bose amp so I could certainly see where there could be differences in the head units themselves.
Typically Bose and non-Bose PCM's can be reprogrammed to work, but there are some part numbers that are built without built-in amplifiers. It sounds like you got one of these units, I can confirm for you if you have the part number. They stopped making them in 2005 though, since it was cheaper just to produce one unit with amplifiers that could also be programmed to simply output via fiber-optic.
I sent him the part numbers that you had posted in a previous post. Do you know of any other shortcuts besides the trip+main that shows information about it? The part number was tough to read on his pcm and he was looking for a way to confirm it.
Hey Suneet... I don't have the part number, but I know that the PCM recognizes mp3's. Won't that mean its one of the newer ones that would have the built-in amp?
nizmo... there were actually 2 PCM2.1B revision units for the Boxster (B-units play mp3's) that didn't have amplifiers built in...
997.642.143.03 and 997.642.143.02 are the two.
997.642.141.02,.03 can be used with either sound system.
Smounic, that's the only shortcut I know.

Looks like these PCM headunits are hard to find at a decent price. The only one I've been able to find is one on ebay for $1600. At least the model number indicates it will work on my car, but for $1600 I could get an Avic D3 installed with nav, ipod support, and bt phone support. What do you guys think?
If I go with the avic, how hard is it to install. I really don't like the idea of having installers take my new porsche apart! Is the install completely reversible?
Andreigh, you can give it a shot. But I got that information about it not having amplifiers right from a Boxster Technical Service Bulletin.
Nizmo, if I had a choice (ie: not the Bose system in my car), I'd go with the D3 in a heartbeat. Shop around on the Internet for the best price and buy the installation kits from the ebay vendor, thus making it fully reversible. The D3 is a joy to use in my opinion, my friend has it and it looks and works great. The PCM... not really a joy to use, but look factory is always a plus.

Just a quick update, I ended up getting the d3 installed on Friday, and I must say in terms of added functionality, its great. I won't bore everyone with the install details since thats been thoroughly covered here, but for anyone considering getting the d3, I would definitely recommended it (of course I've only played with it for 2 days and have little to compare it to
). Some of my current gripes about the unit that I haven't seen mentioned in too much detail are:
1) POI search won't let you sort by distance (even my cheap tomtom allows sorting). So for example, you want to find the starbucks closest to your current location, you have to:
a) enter the city you want to search
b) enter starbucks
c) look at all the results which are not sortable and click on each one
d) after clicking on each one, which shows you a map with distance, manually decide which one is closest to you
2) Bluetooth hands free won't relay the voice command confirmations over the speakers. So you can say the voice command, but then you need to look at your phone to know what to say next or what the confirmations are.
3) You can't change the keyboard to QWERTY (cheap tomtom allows this choice). Its just in alphabetical order which makes typing slower.
Let me know if you guys have any questions about the unit, I'll be happy to help.
