Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, Ive used a 993 C2 and a 996 TT as daily drivers on the London commute and never had any issue at all with the clutch on either car.

Suggestion
The only challenge is making sure you're in the right gear (which involves listening to the engine note or looking at the speedo, as opposed to checking with your left hand) and that certainly takes a bit of getting used to.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
Try putting "manual AND auto AND turbo" in the search box and pick the 996 option from the forum drop down box. Plenty there for you to read up on. :thumb:
hehehe
I will dare to suggest that all 911's should be manual, this tiptronic/automatic malarky is for women and hairdressers
Real men drive manuals
I shall await the abuse!!!
Alan
Yes - only real men can drive drive manuals. Auto drivers are wimps. Like these F1 boys - they couldn't drive if they had a gear lever to cope with.
What makes me smile is the real men who go all ga-ga over PDK (another form of switchable auto box).
It depends what you use it for. I drive mine every day on a cross town commute. Tiptronic makes it easy, and a manual would be a hard work for an old fart like me. Even so, the tiptronic can be a whole lot of fun when you get on the open road.
Another consideration is that the tiptronic is less likely to have been abused - they can't be over-revved.
If it was a weekend-only toy, then I would probably have bought a manual. But then again, I probably wouldn't have bought a 993/996 or Turbo as a weekend toy - it would have been a 3.2 Carrera.
Tiptronic if
a) used mainly as a daily drive in traffic and on the motorway
b) used to get from A to B and not fussed how
Manual if
c) you find 'driving' a joy
d) you like grabbing your 911 by the scruff of the neck and throwing in/out of corners or for trackdays
PDK
e) for (a), (b) and (d) ... not sure if I would include (c) but then I've never driven one with PDK
I have a slightly different opinion to that.
I find the the manual is a better car if mainly motorway miles. I typically use the Tip in manual mode when driving 50mph+, otherwise the box can hunt between gears, which can be frustrating.
I agree on the rest though...
If you use your car as a daily commute, then I'd recommend a Tip.
If you use it as a weekend thing, then get a manual. Preferably a lovely early example.
If I have the occasional weekend out, I do miss a manual, but the benefits of a Tip far outweigh the downsides.
For example, I had a really early start this morning and had been looking forward to it all night. Finally, an open road where I could give it the big one (despite the ice!) - hmm, that sounds slightly dodgy.
Once you get the hang of the box, it's just as easy to drive as a manual. The only challenge is making sure you're in the right gear (which involves listening to the engine note or looking at the speedo, as opposed to checking with your left hand) and that certainly takes a bit of getting used to. eg. I lost count the amount of times I put my car into 1st, after thinking I was in 3rd.
The Tip certainly isn't your standard automatic, so make the choice based on your requirements.
What I would add, and let's be honest, the people that claim that manuals are for girls are usually closeters anyway.
Actually I have manuals for my masculine side :nooo: (Porsche), and autos for my feminine side
(Mercedes). and a Smart Roadster with the quirky Smart semi auto gearbox, when I dont know what I am :what: !

Personally I wouldnt want atip but can understand those who might chose it
However, Ive used a 993 C2 and a 996 TT as daily drivers on the London commute and never had any issue at all with the clutch on either car. Bot cars were as easy to drive in heavy traffic as a Mondeo
They are above all the most practical supercar of all time
That's a really good point actually. It is not a heavy clutch that's the issue, more just the aggro of going from 1st to 2nd a million times a minute.
I certainly am not advocating a full auto, but a tip is a good compromise in that situation.
I guess the guy asking the question also needs to consider the performance merits of each in terms of straight line punch.... are there any differences?
the tip may not let you rev upto maximum loads, but when used in 'manual' mode is it not a quicker change?
I will too have the same decision to make if a 996 TT is the way I go....Never had an auto.

where does the Porshce fit in?

The Tip is nothing like a DSG. The DSG is similar to the PDK (but nowhere near as good).
The gear change is reasonably smooth, but can jar a little.
In a straight line the majority of people on here would not be able to accelerate faster than a Tip in a straight line.
The few that can accelerate faster in a straight line won't be for too long, as they will completely destroy their clutch in the process.
In terms of normal spirited weekend driving, the manual will be faster certainly. However, the Tip would certainly be able to keep up and now I've got the hang of clicking to the right gear and keeping it in M mode, like I said, it's a good compromise.
PS - I've always had manuals up until now and because it's daily driver, I doubt I'll go back. My next purchase will probably be a PDK though....and with launch control that is almost certainly faster than most people in a straight line. I also believe it has more gears and the Turbo is accepted as faster with this auto gearbox.
