I consider myself quite a competent person as I've recently changed all 4 disc's and pads on my car

I bought a 996 C4S Tip S (52 reg) last year and having looked at my service book I don't believe a spark plug change has ever been done :nooo:

How easy/difficult is it to replace the spark plugs?

Hi Lloyd, when you refit the exhausts do you put in dry, or use exhaust sealant?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone help please?

Ataif, I had a look at this job today on my C4S.
Its a case of taking the rear wheels off, supporting your car on stands, removing the heat shields then take out the coils, then the spark plugs.
I got as far as removing one bolt off the heat shield then got stuck as I didn't have a suitable spanner to remove the second.
Apparently its easier if you remove the exhaust pipes, but I didn't fancy that, job for another day.
Good luck Ray

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EASY!!
You have to do this one yourself.
Do it this way and you will be fine...
Tools required:
13mm socket wrench
17mm socket wrench
10mm spanner
13mm spanner
Thin (14mm I think) spark plug socket
5mm allen key
1. Jack up rear and remove rear wheel
2. Ly beside car with feet exiting towards rear putting your shoulder inline with rear brake disc
3. Reach under arch between rear box and engine where you will find the exhaust is mounted by 3 13mm M8 nuts, simply undo all three
4. Undo connector pipe from rear box to cat
5. shuffle the box loose, remove 3 m8 nuts from previous and the box should now be free
(I can remove one box in under 15 minutes myself)
6. Remove heat shield covering coil packs by removing the M6 10mm securing bolts
7. Remove all of the 5mm allen key securing bolts (2 in each coil)
8. Disconnect all the wiring plugs (these are tricky but not difficult)
9. Pull firmly and slowly on each coild to extract
10. Swap the spark plugs over
Then do the reverse of the above and do same the other side.
Use Silicone Grease liberally on the coils when refitting, this keeps the damp out and pro-longs the life span.
Total time should be max 4 hours
Any problems PM and I can talk you through any stage and where to get special grease

No, well not if you can help it because paste could damage the OBD2 rear lambdas. The sleeve is designed to crush down to size by coiling down in size making a perfect seal. If you do get a slight blow use minimal paste. This is only relevat on MY01 > cars with 4 lambdas. Earlier models are ok to use paste in this location.
Thanks Lloyd I've deceided this is a bit too much for me to handle. There are some good local specialist Porsche garages who have a good reputation. I will probably get it done by them. Thanks for the advice anyway
