Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, Does anyone else ever get a strange smell coming from their 911??? I have a 996 C4 Cab (1999) and she runs beautifully (recently shipped her to my new home in Australia). However - occasionally and esp. when the roofs down - I get the strangest smell - not unlike rotten cabbage. I used to have a 993 C4 Cab and to used to get the occasional strange smell from that too - sometimes like burning or oil etc - but never had an issue other than that. Does anyone have any similar issues? I used to put it down to the fact that it's a performance sports car that gets driven hard and these smells are just part of it. As I say she's drives great and there are no warning lights on. The Temperature gauge Never goes over much over the middle, everything seems as it should be so is this normal? Regards, Dan.

POST 2Original post

I assume you dont mean the smell coming off the mufflers when hot...burning the crap kicked up off the road?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I wouldnt have the faintest idea - maybe? It is always the same smell though i know that much. I guess that could be one explanation.....

been putting the groceries in the wrong end? TB

POST 6Original post

:floor: :floor: :floor: Reminds me of when I was hungry in a Eurotunnel queue once, and a little voice came from the next car saying "look Daddy, that man just got a banana from his engine"..

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LOL yeh must be that, i wont let the Mrs take it too the shops again!!! :?

POST 9Original post

Joking aside I understand it can be a worry when you smell something unusual. Best to monitor conditions when it happens.

POST 10Original post

Rotten Cabbage Sounds (smells) like the catalytic converter to me. Smell is worse when you are reversing or parking? This is not uncommon.

POST 11Original post

It's not just the usual hot brakes smell that is normal for a 911. No prankster has stuffed something in your exhaust? Smell your tailpipes to see if it is worse there. I want to catch this on video if you do though The only smell I had in my car was when my back end stepped out once  Pete

POST 12Original post

Give up sprouts for a week then see what happens! :food:

POST 13Original post

Sulphur from the Cat (alytic), Normal me thinks.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Actually it seems to be just after I start it (first 5-10 mins) and especially if i boot it during that time - going back to one of the previous comments it does actually seem to be coming from the mufflers? Or it could be the brakes or Cat. Anyway - as i said she drives perfectly so i think i will stop worrying, unless it gets significantly worse. Shes due for a service soon-ish too so they can look at it then. Cheers Dan.

POST 15Original post

Do you use the same brand of fuel for each fill? If so, try changing brands. I used to get a rotten egg smell from the cat on one of my Audis, and it went away when I started using a different fuel.
