Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil yourself' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace oil yourself' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Perhaps this is my imagination, but then again perhaps not.
After my 996 C4 engine was rebuilt by Hartech following an IMS failure, I realised that there had been a 'rattling' noise coming from the engine, particularly on starting, for some time. Of course it's possible that it was due to something else, but it's not there now which makes me wonder if it was a tell tale sign of the IMS about to let go.
If that is the case, should my OPC have heard and spotted a potential problem in the 111 point check and service they carried out only weeks before?
Probably, if they had cut the oil filter open and checked.
like you would if you changed your oil yourself.
Then yes id say there could have been a big chance of saving your Engine from going bang.
But its no skin off there nose, they can then sell a new engine because they designed an Engine where the shaft gets starved of oil and they know it.
A rattling noise on startup that disappears after a few seconds to minutes (depending on how long the car has stood and grade of oil) ismore than likely just a noisy tappet that quietens down once oil has worked its way back.
They probably all do this and its nothing to worry about...
So...who's got a Rennlist login and can tell us more about what i guess is a bearing vibration monitor? (very common in the motor industry for detecting imminent failure of motor/gearbox bearings)
My guess is that Stuart is correct, but I have no idea how much those things cost. It must be some kind of frequency/vibration detector, and at less than £200 would be the best insurance you could buy - assuming it works, which it should.
Quite exciting. I almost wish I had a Carrera, so I could get one!
Wishful thinking Chris.
IMO this is a must-have. Your chances of an IMS failure are very low, but this will alert you that it may be about to let go, and give you a chance to stop the car befare the grenade goes off, and get it investigated. In case of the worst, it would then turn a £5000+ bill into a £1500-ish one.
To be honest not trying to scare munger I don't think IMS Failure is as rare as we would all like to think.
I don't hear of many cars making it past 100k without some nasty gremlins.
Especially as looked after as some of these cars are.
As far as warranty is concerned.
I think that Flat 6 will only be offering that to US, but if there is going to be a UK distributor I'm sure it will be someone that currently does IMS upgrade e.g.
Hartech would be my bet) "although the UK agent is not yet named".
And surely they would offer the same level of service, as long as they have faith in the product. and if not they wouldn't sell it.
I have every faith in it. Although I obviously haven't seen it yet nor 100% no what the technology is. CRAZY eh.
Just some food for thought the IMS bearing in our cars is totally starved of oil it relies on oil splash.
The oil down there is black it just doesn't circulate as it should. It's bad design.
Just encase anyone didn't know.
For the sake of £250 a no brainer.
