My gearchange is a little crunchy/notchy at times - I want to fit a shortshfiter but and I was told to do a gearbox oil change first. I've been getting some crazy quotes from garages to do it. I don't live in the US but they are around $500 which seems crazy to me.
First, How much would you guys expect to pay for this? How many litres of oil does the
Cayman
gearbox need? What is the best stuff to use - is ti Mutul? What about additives? I might try to do it myself. I am really not mechanical at all but I can ask a friend to help. Is it difficult? Does anyone have a guide?
What year and what gearbox? The manual transmission oil change is not much harder than an engine oil change but the
PDK
is a different beast. I seem to remember something like 3 quarts of high quality gear oil (don't quote me on that) for the manual, so that is less than $100 if you do it yourself. I could look up the details if you get that far. You will need a way to get the car off the ground and off of the rear suspension (rear tires in the air).
Since he references short shifter I'm guessing it's MT. If it's like my
986
that will require a triple square anti tamper socket to remove the fill (I think it's the fill could be the drain it was years ago). Zuch is correct about
PDK
, which uses expensive gear oil and clutch fluid on the
986
the synthetic gear oil was relatively cheap. PS Crunchy gear changes might not be the gear oil, they could be worn syncronizers which would be "no bueno". Also I think you are referring to Motul which is one of a few possible oil choices.
Yes it's a manual, 2006. I'm going to do it at one of those places you can rent a bay and tools. I assume (hope ) they have the right tool.
I really hope its not a synchro issue, as I assume there is nothing you can do bar get a new gearbox...
Colly, PM sent. I included a DIY step by step with pictures. I didn't write it myself and I don't remember which forum I got it from so it doesn't feel right to post to the world. The only two tricky parts are: 1. Once you have the triangle support plate off, do not put weight on the rear suspension. Replace that support plate and torque to spec before lowering the car. 2. Make sure you can get the fill plug out. Do this first, because if you can't and you drain the oil, you will have a problem
The oil change made all the difference in the shift feel on my car.
Can you share the write up?
If you're going to do this job on a 6 speed, I highly recommend just drilling a hole in the support plate. It make the job simple compared to removing the plate every time.

Got my car earlier this year and can't find record of the transmission oil change (supposed to be done at 12 years: 2018). So, need to get it done. Sounds like it's an easy job anyway, but fancy making future service easier too. Who's drilled a hole to access the drain plug? If you have, I'd...

Just for the record, there are a couple of guys who put together the info for the
PDK
fluid and gear oil change for the
PDK
transmission and can be found online. I did mine last summer and after understanding what was needed the job was pretty easy. Before I changed out the fluid the car would bog down going into corners, after the change no bogging down.
Do it yourself. Super easy.
For got to reply with an update, I did it myself, thanks for all the guides. Was very straightforward and has definitely helped a lot with the notchiness. Unfortunately it's not gone and still annoys me, so not sure what to do

Apologies if this doesn’t apply to your car, but the
981
has a bleed screw on the clutch (as part of the brake fluid system). Have you tried that?
Sadly, the screw is super difficult to get to.
