Just remember to torque up the coffin arm (suspension raised to Z=0 position as if the car was sitting on the ground by using a jack to take the weight under the hub before tightening this bolt.

I have loud squeaking from my top mounts on my 2000 c4, are they relatively easy to replace, if so is it just a case of dropping strut out and using spring compressors to remove top nut?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Hi I have loud squeaking from my top mounts on my 2000 c4, are they relatively easy to replace, if so is it just a case of dropping strut out and using spring compressors to remove top nut? also what other special tool will i need please? cheers

POST 2Original post

Don't think it's that simple but I may be wrong. Worth noting though that the top mounts for the 996 C4 are eye-wateringly expensive, something like £200 each. Good news is though, the 997 C4 top mount also fits and is much cheaper. I paid £85 each.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah ok thanks Alex ill check out the 997 ones, i see they are very expensie on design 911 site

POST 4Original post

I've just replaced mine on a 996t which will be the same. Pretty straight forward. Easiest way is to wind the spring past the spring perch on the shock. This will give you enough room to loosen and remove the top mount.

POST 5Original post

I manged mine without having to split the bottom ball joint, not sure if the front driver train on the C4 would prevent this other than having to take the drive shaft off the inboard drive flange to get the articulation. Lowered it all after unbolting the droplink off the ARB and released the torque on the inboard end of the coffin arm which allowed the strut/hub to drop low enough to come out under the wheel arch but still attached to the coffin arm. Just remember to torque up the coffin arm (suspension raised to Z=0 position as if the car was sitting on the ground by using a jack to take the weight under the hub before tightening this bolt.
