RUF also installed a new ceramic-coated exhaust system.

The engine ran okay, but -to be perfect - a new housing had to be designed.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Would you mind sharing the cost of this mod?
I would think you could recoupe a nice chunk of cash by selling your 3.4L engine. There are lots of 2.7L Boxster owners that would love to have that engine put into their car.

"Orton Cayman R-380
I am the elusive owner of the Cayman S 3.8 conversion by Orton Performance. I have driven the car approx. 1000 miles since picking it up in Atlanta on 7/17. To date there have been no issues with this conversion-no check engine light etc. It behaves exactly like stock until you floor it - then all hell breaks loose. The car is very quick (not quite as fast as my 996 Turbo) & the exhaust sound from 5000 rpm & up is unreal. It uses stock mufflers but only two 100 cell cats.

objectuser - Upgrading a base Cayman might be a way to save some money, but if I was putting that kind of HP into that car, I'd at least want to have the "S" brakes, and some of the other more heavy-duty components that come on the
Cayman S
.

Yeah, I need to go read the differences between the base and the S. If the base doesn't have the four piston calipers, then that's a very good reason, yes. It's $10k between them though. I should see what can and can't be added.
Thanks, brad.
If a person started with a base cayman instead of an S to build a 3.8 cayman, he/she would have to get the optional 6 speed as well. i have no idea what it costs.
anyone who is thinking about the conversion between the s and base should take the base cayman because you can afford it. otherwise you would not do that modification. I think if you do have more power you should get better brakes anyways cause you will be going in those corners a bit faster. If I am wrong will someone please explain.
Do you mean to say,
Otherwise, I'm not sure I understand.
It does appear, however, that both the base and the S come with big brakes (I looked at the model comparison on porsche.com), so I think either one would fit the bill there.
The November 27th issue of Autoweek has an article on the RUF Boxster 3.8S X51 Conversion.

Wayne Corley, sales director for the RUF Auto Centre in Dallas, calls this car the most fun car we make.
Besides making custom motor mounts, modifying the ECU and facing "a bit of a challenge" with the wiring harness, Hans Hoffman, technical guru in Dallas, said that the intake tubing of the 987S did not match up with the housing for the mass airflow sensor of the 997S engine. The engine ran okay, but -to be perfect - a new housing had to be designed.
RUF also installed a new ceramic-coated exhaust system. The car passed its California emissions test.
Everything works so well together. Call it a harmonic convergence of power, acceleration, sound and handling finesse. It easily gobble up the tight and torturous curves of the Ortega Highway.

objectuser - Yes, both are 4 pot calipers, but the "S" calipers are bigger and the "S" rotors are thicker and slightly larger in diameter.
While Porsche routinely "over" brakes their cars, I might think about putting even bigger brakes (maybe the
996 turbo
brakes) on a conversion like this, to keep the same ratio of "over braking." Keep in mind, the car will be putting out almost turbo HP in a package that's quite a bit lighter.

Gator Bite and beez - Thanks, makes sense on the rotors and caliper size. Rotors are relatively cheap (and it comes with cross-drilled anyway, so I'd want to replace them with slotted), but calipers are not.
