Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently picked up a set of bucket seats for my 996 and I'm now thinking about harnesses, can they be mounted via the now redundant rear seat belt lower mounts or do I need a harness bar or rear cage? Also any thoughts on what harnesses to get? The seats I have are the gt3 style carbon ones from design 911 so would be good to get whatever the gt3 would have had if not too expensive Thanks Winny

POST 2Original post

Ideally you will need a harness bar as it can be quite dangerous to fit harnesses at an angle after the seat openings, in a crash the exaggerated weight can crush the seat and crush your spine.

POST 3Original post

You'll need a harness bar or a cage. The reason to go for a cage is that if you were to only have a harness bar and roll the car then the harnesses would hold you in place while the roof crumples into your head rather than you being pushed down into the body of the car. If you want harnesses then you really do need one or the other though. Standard fit are Schroth 6 point ones (which are at the spendier end of the spectrum but not total extortion).

POST 4Original post

Schroth make a quick release harness system that clips into the existing seat belt mounts. No idea if it's safe in the two scenarios described above but would a company like Schroth manufacture them if they were that likely to kill you? https://www.schrothracing.com/item/schroth-quickfit

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone I thought that might be the case now I'm thinking a rear cage is the way to go but also that won't look right with a sunroof and I do like the sunroof. Maybe I should just stick with standard belts then at the end of the day it's just a fun road car :eh!:

POST 6Original post

A harness can be a real pain in a road car. You can't lean forward to get better view at junctions or to look over your shoulder. MC

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep I'm starting to think just keep the standard belts now

POST 8Original post

Are you thinking about harnesses for any specific reason? After 10+ years in TVRs, I feel so safe in a Porsche!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I was looking to brighten up the interior which is all black as the outside is midnight blue I thought red belts or harnesses would brighten things up and would match the rear reflector strip. Then it got me thinking maybe a red cage would work too but it all seems to difficult now. So will stick with regular belts... for now at least

POST 10Original post

Nowt wrong with a Red Cage with a Sunroof fitted imo... I also have had Schroff harnesses fitted since this photo was taken.

POST 11Original post

this would solve the problem https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod134875/Brey-Krause-Harness-Mount-Truss-Porsche-996---997/

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No that cage is exactly what I'm talking about

POST 13Original post

I have to agree with others, putting harnesses into a street car is a great way to ruin your enjoyment of the car. Total PIA. I have them in my track day car, so speak from experience. Secondly, not to sound like the health and safety nazi, but I know over here in the Colonies, most racetracks require that harnesses only be used in combination with a good roller (as someone mentioned crushing roof) AND a HANS (or similar neck restraint). Seatbelts are designed to give to absorb energy, harnesses not so much. If it's cosmetics your after, maybe just buy coloured stock belts.
