POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Asking for a friend who has just had 2 new Goodyear tyres fitted to his 992, paid for in full at full Porsche OPC cost, by an OPC. Both tyres have a DOT of 10/19 which makes them 5 years old. What should that friend do? Does anyone think that this is remotely acceptable from an OPC? Guidance please I can pass on for my friend - thank you

POST 2Original post

He should call the OPC Monday and ask them about it really. Goodyear say you shouldn’t use a tyre that’s got a date older than 6 years, so technically, they’re still OK, but he isn’t going to get that long out of them before he ‘should’ change them again.

POST 3Original post

I recently bought a low mileage 2018 car from an OPC with 2018 tyres and as part of their approved "Used" they fitted a new set. I was very happy with the car as delivered ... and possibly they did me a favour. I also would be unhappy and ask the dealer about 2019 tyres being fitted in 2023/4 ... it would be easier for all if they volunteered to "correct" the problem.

POST 4Original post

Unbelievable! No way should an OPC be fitting tyres of that age. Even their used car policy states more than 3mm and less than 5 years. Definitely go back and request replacements, heck I use black circles for my Porsches and all tyres have been current year or previous year at worst if early in the year when fitted.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jurassic GTS - thank you. Would you have evidence of this in their approved used standards please ? I agree with you but can’t find where it says so. Also says porsche N rated tyres shouldn’t be used when six years old or greater so they’ve sold me tyres with a one year shelf life.

POST 6Original post

@HOTRODS1974 I am away currently so can't dig out my Porsche used car documents. This is from PCGB about a similar issue "OPCs are not allowed to sell Porsche Approved Used cars with tyres more than 5 years old. POST 7Original post

It’s unlikely the OPC fitted them, they probably subbed it out locally. I doubt they knew or even checked. Just take it back and they will sort it.

It would not matter if they were brand new, the OPC or another buyer will reduce the amount they would pay for your car if the tyres are out of date or approaching out of date ash they would argue the 5yr rule. So get it back to them to get new rubber

I am trying to find the legal gumph for tyres, as the company i work for have to be very careful how they are stored, as tyres are slow movers for us

Porsche are not allowed to let any tyres they fit or any Approved use car with the 111 point test go where DOT IS 5 years or more. Simple. So any used car they tyres need replaced. It is in their checklist. Porsche themselves forbid it. Forget the legal position. Was told that all the QC tests failed in my case. Dealers would never ever hold tyres over 5 years. No garage would as I phoned many today!!

POST 29Original post

If Porsche do that as standard, then that's a complete waste of tyres, surely? What if they are 2 years old, or 3 or 4? Most tyre companies follow the BRV from germany. Does the age of a tyre matter? Tyre Safety: 5 Year Rule Tyres are considered to be “new” and fit for retail up to 5 years from the date of production. This is an industry standard based on the German BRV. When in use, it is recommended that tyres are replaced when they reach 6 - 10 years old, (6 years in the case of caravans or trailers).

POST 30Original post

Fifty said: I’m confused - if these were for you, why did you say you were asking for a friend? I have no idea why people feel they need to this. It's quite odd behaviour.

This is an industry standard based on the German BRV. When in use, it is recommended that tyres are replaced when they reach 6 - 10 years old, (6 years in the case of caravans or trailers). The question is how do you know / evidence when a tyre was fitted? There is no requirement to keep a record of the tyre fitting date, so there will be no evidence to back up a that a 5yr old perfectly well warehouse stored tyre that was fitted in year 5 is "in essence,"brand new". Even tho it is. So if you try and sell the car with tyres that are 6yrs old according to the DOT date, but only one year old according to the seller, the buyer will call bull and leverage a discount from you to replace the tyres. I suspect stock is kept low, so the likelihood of aged tyres sitting around is low, but it clearly happens. If I am paying full retail for the tyres, I will demand new rubber. If the supplier has new old stock, which has a reduced shelf life (or indeed, on paper out of date) give the customer the choice and discount the old stock to shift it. To me the issue is being charged full price. Had the OP been given a the option of new at full price or an offer of hefty discount bearing in mind the likely leverage someone will apply on the event of a sale, then the case for accepting NOS tyres becomes more appealing

POST 32Original post
