I changed the lower control arms and coffin arms with an alignment done afterwards - this dramatically improved the feel and handling.

I was always a Boxster boy and preferred a MR layout, or so I thought until I took the 996 for a test drive and fell in love with it instantly!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I'm still in my first year of 911 ownership, which is a 2003 C2 cabrio. I was always a Boxster boy and preferred a MR layout, or so I thought until I took the 996 for a test drive and fell in love with it instantly! When I got the car, I had it looked over by a local Porsche workshop to give me a list of things the car really could have done to it. One of the things they mentioned was the front control arms, which should be replaced at some point (not urgent). With that in mind, I have a couple questions about the steering. First, at full lock (which only happens when I'm parking/ pulling out at low speed) the front wheels start scrabbling, meaning one of them is not in the right direction. But this only happens at full lock... is this anything serious? The other thing is the feedback on roughish A and B roads; to say the car seems to be telling me exactly what cracks and bumps we are going over is an understatement. I'm hoping this is due to the weight distribution (or lack thereof) over the front wheels, but is this a sign the suspension needs seeing to sooner than later? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Nothing to worry about, other than the noise being annoying. http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=116721&sid=43d5dddeb37624a57fa5f354f1f4f0ec As to your other question, that could be one of a few reasons, I'll leave that for others to chip in.

POST 3Original post

Seemingly it's normal. Mine feels like it's going over centre slightly on full lock and feels nasty. I tend to not put mine on full lock, I back it off a small bit before manouvering.

POST 4Original post

Mines not good on full lock either. I mostly notice on full lock when reversing. So I don't quite go to full lock anymore. To me it's a 'feature' that adds character!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, it certainly does! Love the handling on the car, and have to say, stability at speed is awesome.

POST 6Original post

Hello - I am also relatively new to 996 ownership. Mine is same as yours except C4. Haven't noticed the full lock issue on the 996, but did have the same experience with a Cayman I had before. That was solved with new tyres. Regarding how the car feels on the move, my 996 was quite skittish on uneven surfaces. I changed the lower control arms and coffin arms with an alignment done afterwards - this dramatically improved the feel and handling. Top mounts and track rod ends had also been done fairly recently.

POST 7Original post

The skittering at fully lock is due to the positive or negative Ackerman that aPorsche have built into the car for handling reasons.

POST 8Original post

Yep agree, i used to have a lotus evora and that did the same when on full lock. Use to kind of feel like it scrubbed and skipped the front wheels across the road when at parking speed, it only had 9000 miles on the clock so suspension was spot on.

POST 9Original post

What do you mean by feedback? Kickback/tugging at the wheel, noise, shock in the floor, vehicle jumping about the road? Lot's of possibilities which could cause these, if you can tighten your description it will help diagnosis. Cheers

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No noise or hard jumps; the shocks are old but still functional. What I'm feeling is the steering wheel will jump around a little when going over uneven tarmac, generally at 30-50 mph. The car feels like it's going to jump a lane sometimes but I think I'm being over-dramatic; anything more than a slight turn of the wheel and the steering firms up nicely.

POST 11Original post

First step would be an alignment then, plenty of places offer a free check, would hopefully spot any play in the track rod ends etc. Of course CentreGravity get very good reviews if you want a proper job.
