Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone has gundo hacked or fister modded the Top gear mild silencers? I would like a bit more noise but don't want to go obtrusive. I have these at the moment and thought this would be cost effective way to get some more noise.

POST 2Original post

Depends on the kind of extra noise you want - the hack ultimately seems to get you more "grumble" at idle and low revs I did this to a standard set of rear boxes and came to hate it, particularly after my garage picked the car up from me for once and I heard it as they drove away. It no longer sounded powerful, refined and "sporty". It sounded like I'd done something simply to get more attention cruising around town. My preference became "understated" at low revs and extra noise as revs go past the mid range.... I'd have a full Inconel Kline system with x-pipe if I could (I very much can't!!!) You'd probably get a better version of the hack starting with top gear boxes, but it is likely to be most notable in the low range.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To be honest that is more what I was thinking. I dont want ears bleeding when up the rev range as they sound good then, its just the low revs they are a tad quiet for me. Might go for it. Im assuming pipe size will alter the sound level? Looks like 2in is favourite size.

POST 4Original post

I have the sports silencers on mine and would do a trade for the mild versions? Mine are louder and have a deeper sound, i prefer the quieter silencers.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

TBH the sports one are probably a bit loud for me from the vids Ive seen, Id like something in between.

POST 6Original post

Haha, no problem. I think thats two of us! They aren't to bad cruising but are deep compared to the mild sports

POST 7Original post

I have the Designtek Sports Supremacy - which is apparently a Top Gear exhaust (apparently Top Gear supply stuff to Designtek). https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod...r-Sports-SUPREMACY-DesignTek-for-Porsche-996/ It comes with a gundo hack already installed.....the bypass pipe is narrower than I have seen on DIY gundo (usually 1.5" to 2"). Its probably c 1". I think the pipe diameter changes the tone (larger = lower). Have been really pleased with the sound. The exhaust, coupled with a K&N induction has created a bit of the drama thats missing when OEM * All personal opinion, exhaust not is completely subjective.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep thats pretty much exactly what I was aiming for. The smaller pipe just to add a little more noise. I prefer a higher pitch so combined with the x-over cats that should help. TBH the video isnt any louder than my current ones, probably quiter so Im better working from a known point i.e. my silencers. # Should be able to get someone to knock up and weld in some small pipes for me. :thumb:

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got my silencers done, I've taken a before video so hopefully good comparison. I went with 1.5in pipe.

POST 10Original post

Be great to hear what you think of the sound, when you have them fitted (a good Christmas project).

POST 11Original post

Looking forward to the before and after video clips :thumb:

POST 12Original post

Coullstar, did you get round to popping the before / after vids on YouTube? And what do you think of the mod? I've just fitted some Mild Sports to mine and they are v quiet compared to what I am used to. Though they were PSE stuck open! Happy with them for motorway work, and they appear to have released some power and torque in the mid range, but would like a bit more bark when opening the throttle.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I've not uploaded any videos. As for sound they are louder for sure on lower rpm but hard to tell on higher but I didn't mind then before. Not too much either so a happy medium between loud ones and mild I think.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry forgot I put it on 996 FB page https://m.facebook.com/groups/996owners/permalink/2813736655536413/

POST 15Original post

Cheers for that. Unfortunately I don't have Facebook. Interesting description though. I was after more on wider throttle openings. Maybe not the mod for me.
