I had oil from that general area previously, had the chain tensioner gasket/washer replaced but also had a cracked oil filler neck/tube which also seemed to be leaking and finding its way under the car!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all I'd just been on a nice nearly hour long drive this morning and when I got back home I noticed a burning rubber smell. I left it alone and when returning to the car an hour or so later I noticed a couple small oil stains on my drive. Please see pics. Any idea where the oil is leaking from please? (I assume it's engine oil because it was greasy and brown!) And importantly, is this a big/expensive job to fix? My car is a UK 2002 996.2 C2 3.6. Thanks in advance Kozzy

POST 2Original post

I'd give it a good clean up and check after another drive, looks like the sump to me though. MC

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's also leaking from this area too which is also near the oil pan/sump...is that a bolt or something?

POST 4Original post

The thing that looks like a big bolt is a chain tensioner, it has an aluminium washer on it. Cams need locking before removing it. MC

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On a Facebook group someone suggested it could be spark plug tubes that are leaking. Given the photos do you think that maybe the case...especially since there is oil dripping off the chain tensioner bolt? Thanks

POST 6Original post

Needs a good clean off with some brake cleaner or similar, then you need to get it up to temperature and check for fresh oil. In my experience its never from where you initially think it coming from 👌
